EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnast Skyla Schulte was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in the final round of regular-season weekly awards, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Schulte takes home the honor for the third-straight week and the fifth time in her Spartan career, following up on last week's winning of both Gymnast and Freshman of the week for the conference.Â
The Bolingbrook, Ill. native took home two crowns over the weekend at No. 9 Kentucky and placed second all-around. The Spartans suffered a narrow loss to the Wildcats in Lexington on Saturday, 197.650-197.500. MSU put up its second-highest team score in program history, while Kentucky set a new program-high team score en route to the win.Â
Schulte won a share of the uneven bars title with a career-high 9.950, helping MSU to its new highest team score on bars in the record books, a 49.500. The score replaces the previous high of 49.450 set at the Spartan Invitational in 1998.Â
Schulte was also the sole winner of the beam competition, tying her career-best with another 9.950 on the day, leading the Spartans to a team win on the apparatus with a 49.400. Her final all-around score was a 39.575, good for second place behind Kentucky's Raena Worley, the No. 3 ranked all-arounder in the nation. Schulte's score was the third-highest in Spartan history and comes on the heels of last week's record-setting performance, when she broke the all-around record with a 39.675 against Western Michigan on March 5.Â
Heading into the postseason, Schulte ranks 22nd in the nation and ninth in the B1G in all-around with a National Qualifying Score of 39.420. Her beam average of 9.753 is good for a spot at No. 11 in the conference rankings.Â
The Spartans are on the road this weekend for the 2022 Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. No. 12 Michigan State will compete as part of the second session of the Championships on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., alongside No. 3 Michigan, No. 8 Minnesota, and No. 16 Ohio State inside the Covelli Center.Â
