
Spartans Top Xavier, 6-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. – In the first of two matches on Friday, the Michigan State men's tennis team beat Xavier, 6-1, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
After dropping the doubles point, the Spartans (12-5) stormed back to take all six singles matches over the Musketeers, including five in straight sets.
Lair took care of business first with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court three against Charlie Temming, followed by a 6-3, 6-0 victory by Nick Williams over Caden Kammerer on court six.
At No. 3 singles, Luke Baylis beat Ryan Cahill, 7-5, 6-2, before Jack Winkler clinched the match on the top court with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 52 Diego Nava.
Anthony Pero made it 5-1 in favor of the Spartans after a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against Marco Pennelli.
In the last match to finish, Max Sheldon won two tiebreakers to top Brett Winters at No. 2 singles to round out the sweep for the Spartans in singles. Sheldon edged Winters in the first set, 7-6 (7-4) before falling in the second set, 7-5. In a 10-point super tiebreaker, Sheldon sealed the victory with a 10-5 advantage.
With the win, MSU improves to 12-5 on the season, while Xavier falls to 9-5.
The Spartans return to the court tonight at 6 p.m. to face Niagara (7-5) in the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
