EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team completed a doubleheader sweep with a 6-1 victory over Niagara on Friday night at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Spartans defeated Xavier earlier in the day, 6-1.
"It was a good day," said MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando. "We won a tough match this afternoon against Xavier; we lost the doubles point but came back, fought hard, and were able to close them out pretty quickly. Coming back for a second match is always difficult. Give credit to Niagara, it was a close, competitive doubles point, but overall we were able to play well and close it out. Now we're getting ready for the Big Ten season, which starts next weekend."
The Spartans (13-5) started strong by taking the doubles point, as Jack Winkler and Kazuki Matsuno beat Trevor Masi and Manuel Alonso on court one, 7-5, and Max Sheldon and Luke Baylis topped Tanner Bedard and William Gothlin, 6-4, on court two.
MSU kept rolling in singles, winning five of the six matches.
Carson Gates picked up a victory in the top spot after Trevor Masi was forced to medically retire in the first set with Gates leading, 4-1. On court five, Jarreau Campbell cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gurustat Makkar.
Graydon Lair clinched the match by taking down Manuel Alonso in straight sets at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
The Purple Eagles (7-6) got on the board with a win on court three, but the Spartans closed it out as Josh Portnoy beat Eduardo Villalpando at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-4, and Kazuki Matsuno won at No. 4 singles against Jorge Sedeno, 6-1, 6-3.
The Spartans begin Big Ten play next weekend at home against Wisconsin (Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m.) and Nebraska (Sunday, March 27 at 12 p.m.).
