Caffey’s run ends in third consolation round, while Foley drops decision in second consolation round
DETROIT, Mich. – The Michigan State wrestling team ended its stay at the 2022 NCAA Championships Friday afternoon inside Little Caesars Arena, as redshirt senior Cameron Caffey was the final Spartan to be eliminated from the field.
Â
A paid attendance of 17,497 watched quarterfinal and consolation action during Session 3 in downtown Detroit, as Caffey and fellow redshirt senior Rayvon Foley both went against fellow Big Ten Conference wrestlers to open the session.
Â
Foley drew Purdue's Matt Ramos in the second consolation round, as the two B1G foes met for the third time this season. Despite going down 8-1 early, Foley clawed back to make it 8-6 in the third, but the Spartan's tournament run was halted when Ramos held on for a 9-6 decision over Foley.
Â
Caffey also drew a conference opponent in the second consolation round, facing Wisconsin's Braxton Amos for their first career meeting. For Caffey, he needed a third-period takedown countered off an Amos shot to pull off the 6-5 winning decision to advance in the wrestlebacks. Caffey's time at the NCAA tournament came to a close in the third consolation round, as a matchup against the 17th-seeded Jay Aiello of Virginia ended with the Cavalier notching a 14-4 major decision over the Spartan.
Â
Foley ends the 2022 NCAA Championships with a 1-2 record, while Caffey finishes with a 2-2 mark. Redshirt junior Layne Malczewski and sophomores Caleb Fish and Chase Saldate all wrapped up competition on Thursday evening.
Â
Friday concludes the 2021-22 season for Michigan State.

CONSOLATION – SECOND ROUND
133: #26 Matt Ramos (Purdue) dec. #8 Rayvon Foley, 9-6
In a B1G battle, Ramos got the early takedown but Foley escaped in 43 seconds and defended a single-leg attack shortly before Ramos countered a Foley shot for another takedown. An injury timeout put Foley neutral, and Ramos got a third takedown and a two-point near-fall to hold an 8-1 lead after one period. Foley escaped in the second period, and eventually turned a single-leg attack into a takedown in the final moments of the period. Foley then got an early takedown in the third after an officials' review but Ramos escaped on the restart to go up 9-6, as Foley's final shot attempts were unsuccessful to end his season.
Â
197: #9 Cameron Caffey (MSU) dec. #23 Braxton Amos (Wisconsin), 6-5
Another B1G showdown for the Spartans, Caffey got the early takedown, but an Amos reversal made it even before Caffey escaped, while Amos had his own takedown in the first period on a single-leg attack. Amos built up his riding time over a minute after starting the second period on top before Caffey escaped. Caffey kept Amos down long enough to negate riding time, but Amos eventually escaped and attempted a single-leg shot, but Caffey worked out of it to reattack for his own takedown. A restart required Caffey to keep Amos on bottom for the final 10 seconds to secure the win, and he did just that to claim the 6-5 decision.
Â
CONSOLATION – THIRD ROUND
197: #17 Jay Aiello (Virginia) major dec. #9 Cameron Caffey (MSU), 14-4
Caffey's single-leg attack was countered by Aiello, who picked up a takedown in the opening period and added a two-point near-fall later in the frame, followed by a four-point near-fall. Caffey was able to get a takedown after starting neutral in the second period, but Aiello escaped and had another takedown to go up 11-2 entering the third. Aiello escaped in the third before Caffey had a takedown, but Aiello escaped again and tacked on the riding time bonus to win a 14-4 major decision.
