EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis fell 4-3 on Sunday in a close matchup with Nebraska, taking on the Huskers in East Lansing for MSU's second match of the Big Ten opening weekend.
The Spartans move to a 13-7 record with an 0-2 mark in conference play. The Huskers are now 5-12 and 1-1 in the Big Ten, having lost to No. 5 Michigan on March 25 before facing MSU.
"It was a competitive match, and unfortunately it didn't go our way," head coach Gene Orlando commented. "I thought we came into this match with a good mindset. Nebraska really pushed us, and kudos to them for coming away from it with the road win. We had great wins in three singles matches, but if we're going to pull away with the win we need to pick up a couple more points. It's time to regroup, bounce back and continue our process."
Nebraska went up 1-0 with its winning of the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Jarreau Campbell and Kazuki Matsuno fought hard with their Husker opponents, but fell 6-3. The No. 2 doubles match was won by Dario Huber and Shunya Maruyama over MSU's Nick Williams and Max Sheldon, 6-1. The match at No. 3 went unfinished with Graydon Lair and Jack Winkler leading 5-3.
The two teams then moved on to singles action, with Nebraska winning matches at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to take a 4-0 lead and clinch the match. The Spartans played out the remainder of matches at No. 1, 2 and 6 singles, picking up three points for the 4-3 final score. On the second court, freshman Max Sheldon won his first set 6-1, allowing just one point to score from Nebraska's Calvin Mueller. The match went into a third-round tiebreaker after Mueller evened things up with a 6-4 win in the second set. Sheldon prevailed through the third-set tiebreaker, pulling away with a 6-1 victory. The first-year Spartan improved to 17-8 this season in singles play.
At No. 1 singles, Jack Winkler battled back from a 4-6 deficit in the first set to win 6-2 in the second over Dario Huber, forcing another tiebreaker set. The pair played to a ten-point tiebreaker, with the score staying even through back-and-forth ties before Winkler was able to pull away for the 14-12 win in a lengthy set victory. Winkler went 2-0 this weekend at No. 1 singles and improved to 11-11 overall in singles action.
Nick Williams battled it out with William Gleason on the No. 6 court. The senior earned a 7-5 victory in his first set but also found himself in tiebreaker territory as Nebraska's Gleason took the second set, 6-4. In a ten-point tiebreaker, Williams took the victory by a 10-8 margin.
The Spartans are on the road next weekend for a pair of Big Ten matches in Illinois. Starting on Friday, April 1, Michigan take on Northwestern at 6 p.m. They wrap up the weekend with a match against Illinois on Sunday at noon.
