3/27/2022 12:16:00 PM | Women's Rowing
East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State rowing wrapped up its opening weekend of racing at the Doc Hosea Invitational on Sunday morning. It was the second regatta in as many days for the Spartans, coming on the heels of yesterday's Ivy/Big Ten Double Dual also in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.Â
The Spartans raced in the opening heats for the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, and Varsity Four crews in the morning sessions. The 2v8+ and v4+ boats qualified for the Petite Final, and the v8+ boat the Third Final, but afternoon finals were canceled due to inclement weather.Â
"It was great to get our first weekend of racing completed to kick off the season," head coach Kim Chavers commented. "The team demonstrated great resiliency in the face of some difficult conditions on the water on Sunday. We will now be able to shift our focus to our in-state races next weekend against Eastern Michigan."
The Varsity Eight boat held its own in the first race of the day. The crew was sitting in second place behind Pennsylvania before catching a crab, but the rowers were able to recover and finished in fifth place ahead of Rhode Island.Â
The Varsity Four crew finished in fourth in their race, passing both Dartmouth and Massachusets with a final time of 8:06.14. Michigan State's boat finished four seconds ahead of Dartmouth and eight ahead of the Massachusets Minutewomen. Full results from today's races can be found below.Â
Penn took first place in each of its heats featuring the Spartans.Â
Michigan State returns to the water next weekend, racing against in-state opponent Eastern Michigan on Saturday, April 2. Race times at Ford Lake in Ypsilanti are to be determined. Saturday will also feature a Spartan alumni and family tailgate at the race site.Â
