East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State rowing is back in action this weekend for an in-state race at Eastern Michigan. The Spartans will race a full fleet of boats, with novice rowers hitting the water for the first time this season. Competition begins at Ford Lake in Ypsilanti at 10 a.m. with the novice eight race.
Â
The two teams will engage in a regular schedule of 2,000 meter races with MSU racing with three varsity eight boats, two varsity four, and one novice eight crew. The third and fourth varsity eight boats will race at 10:15 a.m., followed by the second eight. The first varsity crew will race in the finale at 11 a.m.
Â
The Spartans are looking to carry over momentum from their first races last weekend in New Jersey. On March 26 they faced off against Harvard and Yale in the Ivy/Big Ten Double Dual, and followed up on Sunday, March 27 with races at the Doc Hosea Invite. The squad saw eight rowers make their debut for the Green & White on Saturday, a mix of freshmen and those who did not compete in the abbreviated 2021 season.Â
On Sunday, the Varsity Four crew of coxswain Grace Thomas, Sara Hilburger, Kiersten Korber, Andrea Blanzy and Carolynn Garner finished in fourth in their race, passing both Dartmouth and Massachusets with a final time of 8:06.14. Michigan State's boat finished four seconds ahead of Dartmouth and eight ahead of Massachusets. The boat qualified for the Second Final that was unfortunately canceled due to inclement weather.Â
The Spartans will also host a rowing alumni, family and friends gathering after the race at Ford Lake Park in Ypsilanti.Â
