Spartans fall 4-0 to the Golden Gophers
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – A new-look lineup could not prevent the Michigan State women's tennis team from losing a 4-0 contest to Minnesota Sunday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Having now dropped three-straight Big Ten matches, the No. 70 Spartans moved to 1-3 in conference play and 9-6 overall. The host Gophers, ranked No. 55 by the ITA, improved to 13-6 on the season and 2-4 in league action.
Doubles action began with the top Minnesota pairing of Ekin Ercetin and Emilee Duong shutting out the Spartan duo of senior Maja Pietrowicz and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka, 6-0. The Gophers then clinched the doubles point when Rachel Hanford and Maria Rizzolo closed out the No. 2 match over sophomore Ayshe Can and senior Lauren Lemonds with a 6-3 victory.
The final doubles match between Minnesota's Anfisa Danilchenko and Lucy Lu and Michigan State senior Nicole Stephens and freshman Charlotte Gisclon would go unfinished on the No. 3 court, as the MSU duo led 5-4 when play was abandoned.
Duong would then open singles play with a quick 6-3, 6-3 win over Stephens in the No. 2 spot, giving the Gophers a 2-0 lead. Minnesota then made it 3-0 in the team scoring when No. 4 singles player Ekin Ercetin was able to defeat Lemonds in a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Shortly after that, the Gophers closed out their win on the fifth court, as Vasia Karvouni notched a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the Spartan rookie, Gisclon.
The other three singles matches were then abandoned, as Pietrowicz was down 6-7 (4), 0-3 to Hanford on the top court, while Can and Rizzolo were dead-even at 6-2, 2-6, 3-3 on the third court, and junior Tia Mukherjee was battling back in a 3-6, 5-5 match against Danilchenko in the No. 6 spot.
Michigan State continues its road trip on April 2 at Penn State before wrapping up the road stretch at Ohio State on April 3.
