STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Michigan State women's tennis team could not capitalize on winning the doubles points Saturday morning, dropping a 4-1 match to Penn State at the Sarni Tennis Center.
MSU moved to 9-7 overall with the loss, falling to 1-4 in the Big Ten standings, while the Nittany Lions improved to 8-8 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.
The Spartans were able to recover in doubles action after senior Nicole Stephens and junior Tia Mukherjee lost to PSU's No. 3 pairing of Gabby O'Gorman and Alexandra Nielsen, 6-2, posting back-to-back wins on the first and second courts. Senior Maja Pietrowicz and graduate student Mary Lewis evened up doubles play by taking a 6-3 victory over Sofiya Chekhlystova and Karly Friedland on the top court. Then, sophomore Ayshe Can paired up with freshman Charlotte Gisclon for the first time in the No. 2 spot to post a 7-5 win against Olivia Ryan and Yvonne Zuffova to secure the 1-0 lead for MSU, pulling away from the PSU duo after being tied at 3-3.
In singles competition, Chekhlystova got the first of four-straight wins for Penn State, defeating Lewis by a 6-2, 6-3 score in the No. 1 position. The fourth court wrapped up next, as Friedland was able to earn the 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory against Stephens despite losing the opening set, while Zuffova finished off a three-setter over Pietrowicz, winning a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 contest against the No. 2 Spartans player. PSU closed out Michigan State on the third court, where Can fell via a 6-4, 7-6 (2) loss to O'Gorman, clinching the dual-match victory for the Nittany Lions.
In the two unfinished singles matches, senior Lauren Lemonds was up, 4-3, on Alexandra Nielsen before it was halted, while Gisclon was tied with Danielle Alamo at 2-2 when the match was abandoned.
For Pietrowicz and Lewis, their doubles win moved them to 14-10 this season, winning their last two matches together.
