MSU Defeated By BGSU Tuesday

Farquhar belts HR into Red Cedar River against former team.
MSU slid to 11-10 overall with the loss, while BGSU moved to 4-16.
Tuesday was the first meeting between MSU and BGSU since 2012, and the Spartans had their two-game win streak in the series halted in, and still hold an 8-5 overall series advantage. MSU has won seven of the last 10 in the series, with the three losses all coming at home.
The Spartan bats were stymied to only five hits on the day, while yielding 16 hits to the Falcons.
"We're extremely disappointed and upset about how things transpired today, and it's unacceptable," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "It's hard to explain how we can play so well one day and then so poorly the next and that's happened several times this year. As coaches we're going to continue to try different things. For as well as we played on Sunday at Illinois under some difficult circumstances, we came out and just played really poorly today. Win or lose that's probably a little bit more secondary; if we play well and get beat, so be it, but to play the way we did today is unacceptable and it's going to have to change quickly."
Sophomore infielder Trent Farquhar hit a home run against his former team, but it was not enough. Farquhar played at BGSU as a freshman in 2020, playing in 11 games before the remainder of the season was cancelled due to COVID. After BGSU's announcement that it would be discontinuing its baseball program in May of 2020, Farquhar maintained transfer even after BGSU reinstated baseball in June of 2020.
Farquhar finished 1-for-2 with two walks, belting his home run in the eighth inning for his second shot into the Red Cedar River and his third round-tripper overall of the season.
Junior infielder Peter Ahn was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk, while junior outfielder Jack Frank and sophomore infielder Brock Vradenburg were both 1-for-4, with Frank notching an RBI. Sophomore infielder Mitch Jebb was 1-for-5 with a run scored.
The Falcons flew out to a 4-0 lead in their first at bat, with four hits and taking advantage of three Spartan miscues.
MSU got a run back in the home half of the opening stanza, as Jebb led off with a single, moved to second on a walk by Farquhar and came around to score on an RBI single by Frank.
BGSU added two more in the second to take a 6-1 lead.
The Spartans countered with a run in the bottom of the second stanza, as Ahn sparked the rally with a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a groundout, and later scored on another wild pitch.
The Falcons added three in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
Farquhar blasted his Red Cedar River home run in the eighth, but BGSU tacked on two more in the ninth for the final scoring.
On the mound, freshman Ryan Szczepaniak was dealt the loss, sliding to 2-1 on the season. Junior Jack Brockhaus pitched 3.2 IP of relief with four Ks, while redshirt-sophomore Brian Martin pitched 3.0 IP, and sophomore Dominic Hann pitched 1.0 inning without a hit. Martin fired a career-high four strikeouts in his three frames of work.
"I thought he did a nice job," Boss said about Martin. "We have to have somebody that can come in and stop the bleeding, and Brian did that today and we probably extended him more than we ever have today and probably wanted to but it's a tough spot to sometimes pitch in that situation, and I give him credit. He's a great kid and works his tail off and he was ready to go when he was called upon today, and we need more effort like that out of more guys."
The Spartans wrap up the amended eight-game "homestand" against another team from the state of Ohio in Youngstown State on Wednesday, March 30. First pitch for the battle between the Spartans and Penguins is slated for 4:05 p.m.
Michigan State continues the week on non-conference foes by heading to Evansville, Indiana, for a three-game non-conference series at Evansville, Friday-Sunday, April 1-3. MSU and Evansville open the series on Friday at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT, followed by a 3 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. CT first pitch on Saturday and wrapping up on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. CT.
Next week, the Spartans' lone midweek action is the 2022 Crosstown Showdown on Wednesday, April 6, resuming the Crosstown Showdown after a two-year hiatus. First pitch from Jackson® Field™ is slated for 7:05 p.m.
