SEATTLE, Wash. - Michigan State gymnastics arrived in Seattle, Washington on Tuesday night and spent Wednesday enjoying the sights of the city and preparing for Thursday's competition with a walkthrough of the arena.Â
The Spartans take on Alabama, BYU and host Washington in Session I of NCAA Regionals Thursday, March 31 at 4 p.m ET. The evening session at 7 p.m. will include Utah, Illinois, Oregon State and Stanford, of Wednesday night's play-in dual meet.Â
The team drove to Alaska Airlines arena on Washington's campus Wednesday afternoon in the heart of downtown Seattle. While no practice sessions are held at Regionals, the squad was able to look through the the setup and visualize for tomorrow's competition.Â
Head Coach Mike Rowe and select gymnasts commented on their experiences thus far and the team's mindset and preparation heading into the meet.Â
"Our mindset, even though it's the postseason now, is mostly the same," Rowe said. "Everything we've been doing since the beginning of the season; taking it one event at a time, competing with each other, staying in our own bubble and worrying about our own performances, all of those sound like cliches, but they have meaning for us. We're just going into it business as usual and we'll see how it plays out."
Seniors Sydney Ewing and Alyssa Wiedeman were asked what they told their younger teammates about what to expect during the postseason and competing under pressure.Â
"I tell younger teammates that the most important thing about postseason is to have fun," Wiedeman said. "You have put in the hours and finished assignment after assignment to get to this point. It's time to go out there with confidence and trust your training!"
"Make sure to take in every moment and enjoy it all," Ewing added. "We've put in the work and now we get to show it off."
Newcomers Lauren Hsu and Katie Sawyer commented on their experiences so far and getting to come to Regionals as first-year members of the team.Â
"My experience so far on this team has been truly amazing," Hsu said. "I love every part of this group of people, and coming to Regionals in my first year here hasn't surprised me one bit. Ever since I've been on campus I had a feeling that this season was going to be a good one and I am ready to see what this weekend brings."Â
"Words cannot describe what a year it's been with this team," Sawyer commented. "I knew this team was extremely talented from the beginning, but we've worked especially hard this year and it has shown off tremendously. We still have more left in the tank and I can't wait for everyone to see what we're capable of."
The Spartans are the No. 3 seed in the West Region and will compete in Session I of Regionals Thursday at 4 p.m. ET. The top two teams from each session advance to the regional finals on Saturday, April 2. From there, the top two teams out of Saturday's competition will qualify for nationals beginning on April 14 in Fort Worth, Texas.Â
