Spartans win four singles matches to overcome losing doubles point
HUNTINGTON, W.V. – A day after seeing its six-match winning streak come to an end, the Michigan State women's tennis team was able to rebound with a 4-2 comeback victory over host Marshall at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Thundering Herd fell to 7-8 overall.
Doubles action started with senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can winning their six-straight match together, capturing a 6-4 victory over Marshall's Madi Ballow and Jutte Van Hansewyck on the No. 2 court. The Thundering Herd responded by winning the other two doubles matches, as MU's third pairing of Aisling McGrane and Gabrielle Clairotte were able beat freshman Charlotte Gisclon and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka, 6-2, while Emma Vanderheyden and Liz Stefancic edged out graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz in a 6-3 battle on the No. 1 court.
In singles play, Ballow got the Thundering Herd another point when she defeated Pietrowicz on the second court, 6-2, 6-3, but Stephens put MSU on the board when she knocked off Stefancic by a 6-1, 6-4 score in the third spot. Can evened the score when she notched a 6-2, 6-4 win over Van Hansewyck on the fourth court, and senior Lauren Lemonds gave MSU its first lead when she won a 7-6, 6-3 contest on the No. 5 court against McGrane. The Spartans clinched the comeback on the No. 1 court courtesy of Lewis, who won a 1-6, 7-6(8), 7-5 win over Vanderheyden, as the No. 6 match between Gislcon and Sophia Hurrion went unfinished.
Michigan State will end its road trip on Wednesday, March 9 at West Virginia. The Mountaineers and Spartans are set for a 10 a.m. ET opening serve.
