EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team is set to conclude its road trip on Wednesday morning, March 9, as the Spartans take on West Virginia at 10 a.m. in Morgantown, W.Va.
Wednesday marks the final non-conference road match for MSU, with the Green and White winning seven of their last eight contests to hold a 7-2 record this spring.
The Spartans are coming off a weekend that saw James Madison snap MSU's six-match winning streak on March 5 in a 4-1 defeat, as the Dukes rallied after losing the doubles point by winning four-straight singles courts to clinch the neutral-site victory over MSU in Huntington, W.Va.
Facing host Marshall the next day in Huntington, the Spartans recovered after dropping the doubles point for a 4-2 win. The Thundering Herd took a 2-0 lead after MU's Madi Ballow defeated senior Maja Pietrowicz (6-2, 6-3) on the No. 2 court, but senior Nicole Stephens started a MSU run when she won her match on the third court. Sophomore Ayshe Can then got the victory in the No. 4 spot, senior Lauren Lemonds picked up a win on the fifth court, and graduate student Mary Lewis was able to battle back for a three-set win over Emma Vanderheyden on the No. 1 court.
Can and freshman Charlotte Gisclon share the team lead at 10 singles victories, with Can sitting at 10-4 and Gisclon with a 10-6 record. For Stephens, she has won five-straight singles matches to post an 8-5 mark, while Pietrowicz and Lemonds both have eight singles wins as well.
On the doubles side, Pietrowicz and Lewis have a MSU-high nine wins together (9-9 record), while Can and Stephens are 8-4 as a pairing this season and have gone 7-2 in dual matches.
West Virginia enters Wednesday with a 6-6 record on the season, but the Mountaineers have lost three-straight matches to Toledo, Penn and Delaware. Wednesday's match will also be the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
Michigan State wraps up non-conference action on March 12 at home against Columbia, and opens its Big Ten slate the next day with Indiana in East Lansing.
