MSU freshman becomes just the third Spartan gymnast all-time to be named All-American, and the first in program history on beam.
FORT WORTH, Texas - Michigan State gymnast Skyla Schulte wrapped up her freshman season on Thursday night, competing as an individual qualifier on beam at the NCAA Championship semifinals. Schulte earned a score of 9.9125 to finish tied for seventh overall and earn NCAA Second Team All-American honors.
Â
Schulte is just the third Spartan gymnast all-time to be named All-American, and the first in program history on beam. Pam Steckroat was a two-time All-American in 1977 and 1978, while Wendy Minch received the honor in 1995. All three women were All-American on the uneven bars.Â
Â
Representing the Green & White as an individual gymnast at the NCAA Championships, Schulte rotated alongside Alabama, who competed on beam in the second rotation. Schulte scored a 9.9125 from the six-judge panel, good for a tie for seventh place. She matched the third-highest score of the day on beam, with five gymnasts tying for first, one in sixth and four in seventh.Â
Â
"Getting to compete in the Championships, in that arena, was very exciting," Schulte commented. "I was kind of speechless when I first walked in, thinking, 'Wow, I'm really here.'
Â
"I felt very confident today, walking in knowing that I could trust my training and go up there and do what I've been doing all season," Schulte added. "When I get back to East Lansing, I can't wait to share with the team how it felt being at the Championships. It was all adrenaline and no nerves. I knew I could do this, for the team and for everyone out there supporting me."
Â
Schulte was the first Spartan to compete individually at the NCAA Championships since Lisa Burt in 2016 and the 16th individual all-time. Schulte's accomplishments Thursday adds to a number of accolades she has received in her rookie season, including First Team All-Big Ten and 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.Â
Â
Thursday's session officially wrapped up the year for MSU gymnastics, who finished the season ranked ninth in the country. The Spartans capped off a storied season with their highest all-time team score at NCAA Regional Finals on April 2. Michigan State fought down to the wire with top-ranked Alabama and Utah, finishing in third overall with a score of 197.650.
Â
Michigan State re-set the program record score a total of three times, eclipsing the 197.000 mark on five occasions in addition to setting new program highs on vault, bars (49.500), beam (49.500) and floor (49.675). Six Spartans were named to the All-Big Ten team, while head coach Mike Rowe received 2022 Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. Rowe and the coaching staff also earned Regional Head Coach and Coaching Staff of the Year accolades from the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association.
