MSU tops Oakland in back-and-forth in-state battle.
The Spartans came from behind twice on the night, tying it up in the sixth before scoring the go-ahead run in the seventh and went on to post the Victory for MSU, snapping a five-game skein, while dealing Oakland its second loss in a row. Michigan State has now won the last two meetings and 12 of the last 13 games in the series with Oakland, opening a 36-4 overall series advantage, including 31-4 in East Lansing, as Tuesday marked the first meeting between the Spartans and Golden Grizzlies since 2019.
I thought we were much better today, it's good to get a win at home obviously," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I was guys proud of our guys for fighting back after some adversity, we came from behind a couple different times in today's game, and got a couple of big hits when we needed them, so it was a good night."
Michigan State rapped out 11 hits on the night, led by sophomore infielder Trent Farquhar posting a 3-for-4 outing with an RBI and a run scored, one of three Spartans with multiple hits. Sophomore outfielder Jack Frank was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, bashing his team-leading sixth home run of the season over the wall in right center and into the Red Cedar River. Sophomore designated hitter Dillon Kark was 2-for-4.
Sophomore infielder Mitch Jebb went 1-for-4 with two RBI, knocking a two-run bases loaded single in the second to get MSU on the board. Junior outfielder Zaid Walker was 1-for-5 with a run scored, redshirt-freshman infielder Bryan Broecker was 1-for-4 with an RBI and junior outfielder Casey Mayes was 1-for-5 with a run scored. Redshirt-freshman Christian Williams drew two walks and was hit by a pitch, coming around to score twice, including what proved to be the game-winning run in the seventh.
On the mound, MSU used six different pitchers, scattering seven hits. Sophomore starter Harrison Cook went 5.0 IP with four Ks, spraying five hits while yielding two runs and two walks.
Junior reliever Brian Martin earned the win, going 1.1 IP with two punchouts and a walk without a hit or run. After freshman Ryan Szczepaniak pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, graduate senior Kyle Bischoff pitched the ninth, ringing up two strikeouts to register his team-leading seventh save. Bischoff's seven saves are the most by a Spartan reliever since Indigo Diaz also had seven in 2019.
The Grizzlies struck early with a run in their first at bat, on an RBI single.
The Spartans broke through with a rally in the bottom of the second, loading the bases, before Jebb knocked a two-run single through the right side to put MSU ahead, 2-1.
Frank padded the MSU lead in the third, with his solo blast over the right field fence and into the Red Cedar River to give the Spartans a 3-1 advantage.
After a scoreless fourth frame by both teams, Oakland scored a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to open a 5-3 lead.
The Spartans tied it up at 5-all with two runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles by Frank and Broecker, driving in Farquhar and Walker, respectively.
The home team then took a 6-5 lead in the seventh. Williams ignited the rally with a walk and two batters later Kark singled. After the second out of the frame, Farquhar knocked a single that squirted through the right side of the infield and Williams darted around to score the go-ahead run.
Oakland threatened in the ninth with a leadoff double, but Bischoff slammed the door on any rally with back-to-back strikeouts before a groundout to Farquhar at second, sparking the Spartan celebration.
MSU wraps up its six-game homestand and stretch against in-state opposition by hosting Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, April 20 at McLane Field at Kobs Field, also in a 6:35 p.m. start time.
