Michigan State comes from behind for second-straight day; Bischoff picks up second save in as many days.
After the Spartans had a back-and-forth, 6-5, win over Oakland on Tuesday night, MSU again was back-and-forth Wednesday night, leading early, before relinquishing the lead, but then came back with two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Michigan State then got shutdown innings from its bullpen to seal the win.
"I'm proud of our guys. I think they showed a lot of character tonight," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "That could have went south for us a couple of different occasions. We didn't play perfect baseball, but we made plays when we needed to, and that's kind of what it's all about. A great effort out of our guys today, and I think we showed a lot of maturity today, which is what I'm probably most proud of out of this group. They just keep fighting and keep scratching and clawing, and we were able to pull it out today."
Junior reliever Wyatt Rush picked up the win, while junior reliever Andrew Carson had the hold, before graduate senior Kyle Bischoff picked up his second save in as many nights. Rush came on in relief of freshman starter Aidan Arbaugh, who went 5.0 IP, chalking up three strikeouts while scattering six hits and yielding six runs, three earned, without a walk. Rush went 2.2 IP with four Ks, one walk and just two hits without a run. Carson came on with two outs and two Eagles on the bases in the eighth, and fired a strikeout against his only batter faced.
Bischoff pitched a three-up, three-down ninth inning, with a punchout to end it and earn not only his second save in a row, but his eighth of the season. The eight saves is the most by a Spartan reliever since Riley McCauley had nine saves in 2017.
"This was the first time we've used him on back-to-back days in a save situation like that. It was time to do that with him, and he proved he's capable of that," Boss said. "He's obviously pitching with a lot of confidence right now. His stuff is really good, he's got a live arm, the breaking ball is very good, and I think when he takes the mound, he's got that closer type of mentality, which you need to have. So we'll gladly turn the ball over to him in the ninth."
At the plate, eight different Spartans had a hit Wednesday night, with sophomore infielder Mitch Jebb the lone multi-hit outing, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore outfielder Jack Frank was 1-for-1 with two RBI and a run scored to go with two walks. Junior outfielder Peter Ahn was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Redshirt-freshman catcher Bryan Broecker, junior outfielder Casey Mayes, sophomore infielder Dillon Kark, senior designated hitter Zach Iverson and junior outfielder Zaid Walker were all 1-for-4. Walker scored two runs, while Kark touched home once, while Broecker and Walker logged RBI.
Sophomore infielder Trent Farquhar added two walks and a run scored.
The Spartans were quickly on the board, as Jebb led off the MSU lineup in the home half of the first with a double to right center, moved to third on a flyout and then scored on a Frank sac fly for an early 1-0 lead.
EMU plated three runs in the second, taking advantage of three hits and an MSU error, and added another run in the third on a solo HR.
Michigan State rallied in the bottom of the fourth, with the first three batters reaching, including an RBI double by Ahn, chasing EMU starter Dom Anderson, and drawing MSU within, 4-2. Broecker rudely greeted EMU reliever Trevor House with an RBI single to right to drive in Frank. A double play with an overly close bang-bang play at the plate, then a strikeout ended the Spartan rally, leaving the score 4-3.
EMU plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth for a 6-3 lead.
MSU countered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame, as the Spartans loaded the bases and Frank drew an RBI walk to plate Walker who reached on a fielder's choice, then Ahn knocked a line-drive sac fly to left to drive in Jebb, who reached on a single, pulling MSU within 6-5.
Rush came on in the sixth and after yielding a leadoff double, then slammed the door with three-straight strikeouts.
Kark sparked the Spartan rally with a single through the left side. Two batters later Walker laced a double down the right field line, up the embankment into the corner, and Kark darted around from first and slid under the tag. Jebb then followed with an RBI single through the left side to drive in Walker with the go-ahead run.
EMU threatened in the eighth, getting two runners on with two out, and MSU brought in Carson, who rang a three-pitch strikeout to thwart the threat and end the inning.
Bischoff pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, sealing the save by chalking up a strikeout to end it, sparking the Spartan celebration and the flashing lights celebration at McLane Field at Kobs Stadium to conclude the homestand.
