EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State softball team fell to No. 23-ranked Michigan on Tuesday night, 3-0, from Secchia Stadium. Both teams combined for just six hits on the evening as starting pitchers Ashley Miller and Alex Storako duked it out in the circle. Miller and Storako each struck out double-digit batters in the duel.
With a 10-strikeout performance, Miller moved into fourth all-time at Michigan State for single season strikeouts, passing Kristina Zalewski (209, 2016). Miller is just four punch-outs behind third place (Kelly Smith, 222, 2013) with 218 strikeouts on the season. Over the final three innings of the game Miller sent down nine of 10 batters she faced.
Storako struck out 13 Spartan batters, surrendering four walks and one seventh inning hit.
Michigan opened the scoring in the third inning as a trio of doubles to left center brought a pair of runs around to cross home plate. The Wolverines added one run in the fourth as the runner scored from third while MSU turned a double play.
Fifth year Caitie Ladd turned the best defensive play of the night in the fifth inning, scooping a ball tipped off the glove of Miller and flipping it to first for the out.
Faced with the possibility of a no-hitter, junior Camryn Wincher singled to right in the bottom of the seventh to break up the bid.
UP NEXT: Michigan State will travel to West Lafayette, Indiana this weekend for a three-game series against Purdue. The Boilermakers are 2-9 in the Big Ten and 19-24 overall this season.
