Picks up his third weekly conference award of the 2021-22 season
EAST LANSING, Mich. – After putting himself in the NCAA record books for the second time this year, Michigan State track graduate student Morgan Beadlescomb was named the Big Ten Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Competing in the first heat of the men's 5000m invite at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Beadlescomb used a 13:17.16 time to blow past his previous school-record time as well as put himself eighth among the NCAA all-time leaders for the outdoor 5000m. Finishing second in the heat to Washington's Brian Fay and a 13:16.52 time that landed Fay sixth in collegiate history, Beadlescomb cut off over four seconds from his previous personal-record time of 13:21.40 from last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
This is the second time in three months that Beadlescomb has earned himself a spot on a NCAA top-10 all-time performance list. The Spartan ran the fourth-fastest time in NCAA history for the indoor mile when he posted a 3:52.03 in the Windy City Invite's Magnificent Mile back on Feb. 11.
For Beadlescomb, this also marks his third weekly conference award of the 2021-22 campaign, previously claiming Big Ten Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Sept. 29 following a third-place finish in the Griak Invitational's 8K race at 24:18.5, and then winning B1G Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week on Feb. 16 after his Windy City Invite performance. It also marks the first weekly honor for a Spartan during the 2022 outdoor track season.
Michigan State heads to the Indiana Invitational this weekend, with action opening at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Bloomington, Ind.
