EAST LANSING, Mich. – The final weekend of the regular season has arrived for the Michigan State women's tennis team, as the Spartans are set to host Northwestern on Saturday, April 23 at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, before holding Senior Day on Sunday, April 24 prior to their home match against Illinois.
The matches against the No. 39 Wildcats and No. 47 Illini will serve as the final tune-up before the Big Ten Tournament next week in Iowa City. Sunday will also be the final time playing in East Lansing for the quartet of graduate student Mary Lewis and seniors Lauren Lemonds, Maja Pietrowicz and Nicole Stephens.
MSU is coming off a pair of 4-1 losses last week, as the Green and White dropped a home contest to Iowa on April 14 before losing at Nebraska on April 17.
The showdown with the Hawkeyes started with two doubles matches going to a tiebreaker, as Marisa Schmidt and Vipasha Mehra battled back from an early hole to sweep the tiebreaker over sophomore Ayshe Can and freshman Charlotte Gisclon for a 7-6 (7-0) victory on the second court that sealed the doubles point. Singles wins for Iowa on the No. 2 and No. 5 courts then extended the Hawkeye advantage before Lewis won her first set, and claimed the next six games after falling behind 0-3 early in the second set close out the match, 6-4, 6-3. Iowa finished off the 4-1 victory when Michelle Bacalla pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 win against MSU junior Tia Mukherjee.
The Sunday matinee in Lincoln saw the Huskers claim the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 victories on the first and third courts, leaving a 4-4 match for Can and Gisclon against Chloe Kuckelman and Isabel Gallego to go unfinished in the No. 2 spot. Kristina Novak then knocked off Lewis on the top court (6-3, 6-3), and Kuckelman defeated Stephens at the No. 5 position (6-3, 6-3), but Pietrowicz was able to win a 6-3, 6-3 match against Maja Makoric to give the Spartans hope. Nebraska would prevent any chance of a MSU comeback when Samantha Alicea closed it out with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win over Lemonds on the No. 4 court, securing the 4-1 Husker win.
Entering the match against Northwestern, Can leads the Spartans with 13 singles victories and a 10-5 mark in dual matches. Can has gone 8-4 in the No. 4 spot and has recently bumped up to the No. 3 court, where she holds a 2-1 record. Lemonds and Pietrowicz are second on the team with 12 singles wins each, as Lemonds has posted a 9-6 mark in the spring while Pietrowicz holds an 8-10 record since the start of January. Pietrowicz and Lewis have partnered to go 14-12 in doubles play this season, pacing MSU and holding a 3-3 record in Big Ten play.
Northwestern arrives in East Lansing coming off a 4-3 loss to Illinois on April 17, putting the Wildcats at 1-2 in their last three contests after winning their first six conference matches. NU's first Big Ten slip-up was a 5-2 defeat at Ohio State on April 8, but the Wildcats recovered for a 7-0 victory against Indiana two days later. Clarissa Hand ranks No. 113 in the country at a 15-13 overall mark in singles play.
Illinois had a five-match winning streak snapped on April 10 when Penn State upset the Illini, 4-3, but Illinois bounced back with the 4-3 win over Northwestern on Senior Day last Sunday. The Fighting Illini open its final weekend of the regular season on Friday at 4 p.m. at Michigan before coming to MSU. Ashley Yeah has paced the team in singles competition, going 14-5 in the No. 2 position this spring, while Megan Heuser and Kasia Treiber both have 12 singles wins since the start of duals season. On the doubles side, Yeah has partnered with Josie Frazier for an 11-6 record as the second doubles pairing, while Heuser and Kate Duong have gone 11-7 on the top court.
In the all-time series, Northwestern holds a 43-2 advantage over Michigan State, with the meeting in East Lansing last season ending in a 4-3 win for the then-seventh-ranked Wildcats. Illinois also has a lead over MSU in that all-time series, with the Illini having a 36-12 edge against the Spartans after splitting their two matches a year ago.
Michigan State will open the Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City on either Wednesday, April 27 or Thursday, April 28. Time and opponent are to be determined.
