Spartans Fall at Illinois

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's tennis team fell at No. 55 Illinois, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon on the outdoor courts of the Atkins Tennis Center.
The Spartans lost the doubles point to a pair of ranked Illinois teams, as No. 50 Hunter Heck and Lucas Horve beat Kazuki Matsuno and Nick Williams on the top court, 6-0, and No. 61 Montsi Siphosothando and Olivier Stuart beat Jack Winkler and Graydon Lair in the No. 2 spot, 6-4.
In singles, Max Sheldon rallied for a three-set victory over Siphosothando in the No. 2 position, 1-6, 6-0, 6-2. It marked Sheldon's second singles win in Big Ten dual competition this season.
The Fighting Illini (8-11, 2-2 Big Ten) won the other five singles matches. Heck, ranked No. 96 in singles, won at No. 1 over Jack Winkler, 6-1, 6-0, while No. 62 Stuart beat Luke Baylis on the third court, 6-2, 6-3.
Graydon Lair and Anthony Pero both lost tough three-set matches at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively. Lair lost the first set against Alex Brown, 7-5, but came back to take the second, 6-2, before ultimately dropping the third set, 6-3. Pero dropped his first set to Lucas Horve, 6-2, then rallied for a 7-6 win in the second set, but fell in the super tiebreaker, 10-5.
Nic Meister beat Josh Portnoy at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Michigan State (13-9, 0-4 Big Ten) returns to action Friday, April 8 to host Indiana at 3 p.m.
