EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sophomore Ashley Miller threw her 20th complete game of the season on Sunday, allowing just one run on four hits in a 2-1 victory over Maryland at Secchia Stadium. The Spartans scored a pair of runs on sacrifice flies to gut out a crucial late season victory in upset fashion.
Sunday's win is one of the best of the season for head coach Jacquie Joseph's team as the Terrapins entered the weekend as the projected No. 4-seed in the 2022 Big Ten Tournament.
Miller got back into her comfort zone in game three, retiring 13 of the final 15 batters she faced, including nine consecutive batters in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. After allowing four hits in the first three innings, Miller held Maryland hitless over the final four innings of play. With 241 strikeouts on the season, Miller is now 24 strikeouts away from holding the Michigan State single-season record.
The Spartans had much more success against Rutgers starter Courtney Wyche in their second time seeing her, tagging her for seven hits and two earned runs in five innings. Wyche struck out just three after striking out 10 Michigan State batters on Saturday.
Michigan State got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when a sacrifice fly by sophomore Zaquai Dumas scored fifth year Caitie Ladd from third. Ladd looked to have been caught in a run down prior to the sac fly, but safely took off for third on the steal.
Maryland was quick to respond however as an inside the park home run tied things up at 1-1 in the visiting half of the third.
Singles from junior Camryn Wincher and Ladd set up another sac fly situation in the fourth inning. Senior Kendall Kates converted to plate junior Brooke Snyder as the eventual game-winning run.
Ladd led the team with a pair of hits as well as two stolen bases in her final regular season game at Secchia Stadium. Senior Courtney Callahan, sophomore Alexis Barroso, senior Mackenzie Meech, senior Jessica Mabrey and Wincher also recorded base knocks. Callahan reached base twice, also drawing a walk, while Meech led off the fifth inning with a stand up double down the right field line.
UP NEXT: Michigan State will travel to Piscataway, New Jersey for the final regular season series of the season next weekend. The Spartans enter the weekend one game ahead of Rutgers as both teams fight for the final spot in the Big Ten Tournament.
