Omania Takes Third Place in 67kg Greco, Caffey Places Fourth at 92kg Freestyle
CORALVILLE, Iowa – Despite not reaching Final X and a chance at representing the United States at the World Wrestling Championships, Michigan State wrestlers Cameron Caffey and Peyton Omania both were able to finish in the top-4 of their respective weight classes on Sunday at the 2022 U.S. World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, being held at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
Â
For Omania, he rebounded from a loss to Alejandro Sancho in the morning semifinals to win his next two matches and claim third place in the 67kg Greco-Roman division, while Caffey finished in fourth place for the 92kg freestyle bracket after dropping his third-place match to Jonathan Aiello.
Â
Opening the day with a spot at Final X New York on the line, Omania was not able to have a repeat of the 2021 World Team Trials over the former Olympian, as Sancho pulled away late for a 5-1 decision over his Spartan foe.
Â
Omania responded in the consolation semifinals with a dominant 8-0 victory by superiority against Jessy Williams, ending the bout in 1:46.
Â
Facing Lenny Merkin in the third-place match, Omania scored another victory by superiority, 10-2, grabbing the win only 1:20 into the match.
Â
Caffey bounced back from Saturday night's semifinal loss to Isaac Trumble by securing a 12-2 victory by superiority over Michael Battista, moving past the consolation semifinal round in 4:31.
Â
Advancing to the third-place match against Aiello, Caffey battled back with some late points after falling behind early, but Aiello was able to prevent Caffey from rallying further and closed out a 6-3 decision over the Spartan.
Â
On the weekend, Omania tallied a 3-1 record in the 67kg Greco class, while Caffey went 2-2 in the 92kg freestyle field.
