EAST LANSING, Mich. – Head coach Jeff Hosler and Michigan State women's soccer announced the fall 2022 schedule on Friday.
"After a great first fall in East Lansing, we are so excited about the positive momentum in this program," Hosler said. "This group worked really hard over the winter and spring months to continue growth in all aspects of their individual and team development, and the results showed with an undefeated spring season."
The 2022 slate includes eight competitors from conferences outside their own including the AAC, Big East, America East, SEC, MAC, PAC-12, Ivy and Horizon leagues. Two nonconference opponents are in-state rivals, as the Spartans face Central Michigan on Aug. 25 and Oakland on Sept. 8.
The Spartans will be tested by tough competition, as seven of their opponents saw action in last year's NCAA Tournament. Arkansas made it to the College Cup and are the reigning SEC Champions. Fellow Big Ten opponents Purdue, Ohio State and Penn State also saw action in the postseason. 2021 B1G Tournament champion Michigan made it all the way to the quarterfinals, while Rutgers journeyed into the semifinals, both teams eventually falling to National Champion Florida State.
After a pair of exhibition matches, Michigan State opens the season on the road with back-to-back games in Ohio, against reigning MAC Champions Bowling Green and Cincinnati. From there, the Spartans will play another MAC rival in Central Michigan before facing off against Binghampton on Aug. 28, which will also serve as the team's Senior Day celebration. MSU is on the road one final time in nonconference action, at Arkansas on Sept. 4. Alumni and Family day is on Sept. 11 against Colorado.
B1G play begins on Sept. 18 with a game at Illinois. From there, the squad hosts back-to-back contests in a rematch against Iowa on Sept. 22 and a game with Purdue on Sept. 25. Two games will be played on the east coast against Penn State (Sept. 29) and Maryland (Oct. 2) before the Spartans get a chance to host in-state rival Michigan on Oct. 9. Rutgers will serve as the opponent in MSU's regular-season finale on Oct. 23.
"This fall will bring new challenges, including one of the toughest non-conference schedules in over a decade at Michigan State and Big Ten conference competition that has quickly risen to one of the best in the country," Hosler added.
Hosler took over for long-time head coach Tom Saxton in 2021 and led the Spartans to a 10-5-3 finish and the team's first Big Ten Tournament appearance since 2011. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Kozal was named the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and United Soccer Coaches All-American, while Ava Cook and Samantha White both earned spots on the All-Big Ten team.
