EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State graduate senior wide receiver Jayden Reed has been named to the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, which is given annually by the Louisville Sports Commission to the nation's most versatile player. Reed, who has been named a first-team preseason All-American by Phil Steele as an all-purpose player, was one of five finalists for the Paul Hornung Award in 2021.
Reed has also been named to watch lists for the Biletnikoff Award (nation's top wide receiver) and Maxwell Award (College Player of the Year).
Reed, who earned first-team All-America honors last season as an all-purpose player by the American Football Coaches Association, not only led the Spartans with 59 catches for 1,026 yards and 10 touchdowns, but he also ranked first in the Big Ten in punt returns (19.8 avg.; 12 returns for 238 yards) and tied for the FBS lead with two punt returns for touchdowns (62 yards vs. Nebraska, 88 yards vs. Western Kentucky). His 10 TD grabs were sixth most in an MSU single-season and his 1,026 receiving yards ranked ninth most. Forty-two of Reed's 59 catches (.712) went for either a first down or a touchdown, and he led MSU with 32 explosive plays (20-plus yards), including 20 receptions, nine kick returns and three punt returns. In addition, seven of his 10 TD catches were from 25-plus yards.
Reed's playmaking ability was on full display in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, as he was named the game's Offensive MVP after hauling in six passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns in the win over No. 12 Pitt, including the go-ahead score from 22 yards out with 2:51 left in the game.
Now in its 13th season, the Paul Hornung Award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission in the memory of the late football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville in March 2023.
