Spartan Men’s Soccer Nipped By Bulldogs In Sunday Exhibition

MSU edged in second exhibition of season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State men's soccer played its second exhibition of the 2022 season and the Spartans were nipped by the Bulldogs of Butler, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at DeMartin Stadium.
The teams played a hotly-contested first half, with Butler holding a 9-4 shots edge, but the MSU defense was up to the task, keeping the Bulldogs off the board.
Butler broke through in the 54th minute with a goal off a deflection in the box, with Palmer Ault getting the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead for the visitors.
The Spartans ramped up their offensive pressure and had their best scoring chance of the match in the 82nd minute. Freshman midfielder Jack Guggemos uncorked a firecracker shot from the top of the 18-yard box that rattled the woodwork by going off the post, but junior midfielder Vedad Kovac's shot attempt at the rebound was saved by Butler goalkeeper Caleb Norris.
Butler finished with a 12-8 shots advantage, while shots on goal was level at 5-5, and corner kicks were also even at 2-2. The Bulldogs were whistled for 13 fouls compared to nine for the Spartans.
The two teams played an extra 30-minute exhibition session, with Butler scoring one goal.
MSU wraps up exhibition action by hosting Pittsburgh on Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.
Michigan State officially opens the regular season against Army on Friday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium.
