Spartans Book Second Straight Shutout with Draw at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – In a physical battle with both the opponent and the elements, Michigan State women's soccer worked to a scoreless draw with Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium.
Â
Michigan State dominated the shot chart, amassing a 10-5 edge in shots attempted, while owning the possession battle for most of the game. The Spartans attempted eight corner kicks compared to Cincinnati's lone attempt and notched two shots on goal compared to UC's one. Senior forward Lauren DeBeau, junior midfielder Justina Gaynor, graduate defender Ruby Diodati and freshman midfielder Morgan Gerak highlighted the box score with two shots apiece.
Â
Both squads got out to an even start through the early going, with MSU pushing for scoring opportunities in the first five minutes on a pair of corner kicks. Stingy defense kept the score deadlocked for much of the opening stanza, with DeBeau booking the first shot of the game in the 15th minute.
Â
In the 23rd minute, officials were notified that lightning entered the area, requiring a weather delay. Play resumed after over an hour in the locker room, with Cincinnati logging the only shot on goal of the half that rolled safely into the hands of senior goalkeeper Lauren Kozal. The game entered halftime knotted up at nil.
Â
Following the shortened halftime intermission, the Spartans maintained their possession-based attack and fought for multiple scoring chances. Justina Gaynor attempted a banger in the 52nd, but the shot nicked the post and careened out of play. Graduate midfielder Celia Gaynor found herself in a one-on-one battle with the Bearcat keeper in the 59th minute, who collected the shot for a save to keep things square. After senior midfielder Raegan Cox earned her second yellow card following a collision with the keeper in the 85th minute, the Spartans were forced to play shorthanded for the remainder of the game. MSU weathered the storm and completed its second consecutive shutout of the year moments later.
Â
Kozal secured her second shutout of the season and locked in the 15th clean sheet of her career. The Ada, Michigan, native finished with one save and played all 90 minutes of Sunday's contest. For Cincinnati, Anna Rexford went full-time and logged a pair of saves on the afternoon.
Â
For the second-straight year, the Spartans have held each of their first two opponents of the season scoreless. In the first year under head coach Jeff Hosler in 2021, MSU booked shutouts against both Detroit Mercy and Eastern Michigan, notching seven combined goals in both games. The Green & White have opened the season undefeated through two games in each of the past five years.

On the team's performance at Cincinnati...
"We came in with a strong start. Our team moved the ball well and didn't allow any chances before the thunderstorm rolled in and we were forced inside. I thought we were a little flat coming off the hour break and just didn't play with the same tempo. In the second half, we made some adjustments that led to some really good attacking chances. MJ (Andrus) rang a volley off the post and their goalkeeper came up with a huge save on Camryn's (Evans) volley to remain level. After Raegan was sent off, we did a good job of seeing the game out to leave with a draw."
