Hanssen, Jarvie and Rutherford Named Preseason Big Ten Field Hockey Players to Watch

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey seniors Merel Hanssen and Hannah Jarvie as well as sophomore Ellie Rutherford have been named Preseason Big Ten Field Hockey Players to Watch, as announced by the conference Wednesday.
Hanssen, a midfielder out of Maastricht, Netherlands, started all 15 games for the Spartans during the 2021 season, leading the team in scoring with 17 points (6 goals, 5 assists). She garnered Second Team All-Big Ten honors and was named to the NFHCA All-West Region second team.
Jarvie played in every contest for the Spartans during the 2021 season, tallying three goals and an assist at forward. The Saline, Mich. native was selected to participate in the USA Field Hockey 2022 Senior Nexus Championship in July.
Rutherford started at midfield in all 15 contests for the Spartans during the 2021 season, ranking second on the team with four goals. A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Rutherford is a member of the Scotland U19 team. She collected Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on Sept. 13, 2021, and was named the team's Rookie of the Year during the 2021 season.
The Spartans open the regular season at home against American on Friday, August 26 at 6 p.m. at Ralph Young Field.
