Four Spartans Find the Back of the Net in Win over Chicago State
9/12/2022 9:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer
MSU scores two in the first half and two in the second in the win.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Four different Spartans found the back of the net as the Michigan State men's soccer team defeated Chicago State, 4-1, Monday night at DeMartin Stadium.
"A very good first half, very sharp. We wanted to challenge our guys to come out in the second half different than we did against Army at home. We had a little hiccup on the one goal, but other than that a good performance on both sides of the ball," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said.
With the win, Michigan State improves to 2-3-1 overall, while Chicago State falls to 0-4-2.
The Spartans were aggressive from the beginning with a string of early shots, highlighted by a Jake Spadafora shot that was corralled by CSU goalkeeper Marco Seyfert.
The barrage of early offensive finally paid off for MSU in the 26th minute when junior forward Greyson Mercer scored his first goal of the season off the corner kick from freshman forward Tyler Crawford. The assist was the first collegiate point for Crawford.
In the 45th minute, the Spartans snuck in a second goal. Senior forward Gianni Ferri drew a foul that led to a Will Perkins direct kick. His blast was punched away by Seyfert, but the following header snuck in for a goal to give MSU the 2-0 advantage.
The Spartans made it a 3-0 game in the 55th minute when freshman midfielder Jack Guggemos scored his second goal in as many games. Once again, Ferri was involved in the play with a pass inside the box that found the head of Guggemos.
After Michigan State's third goal, Chicago State amped up the offensive pressure and was eventually rewarded. The Cougars denied Michigan State of a shutout when Niall Stephen-Reed took advantage of a Spartan turnover to make it a 3-1 game.
In the 82nd minute, Sean Martin fouled redshirt-junior midfielder Kellan Landefeld in the box to give MSU the penalty kick. Senior defender Will Perkins converted the PK to seal the victory for MSU.
The Spartans out-shot the Cougars 17-11, while leading in corner kicks 7-0. Senior goalkeeper Owen Finnerty once again tied his season-high with six saves.
Michigan State now prepares for a Spartans vs. Huskies weekend. MSU will take on No. 2 Washington on the pitch on Friday, Sept. 16 at 10 p.m. ET, ahead of the MSU football team's battle with Washington on Sept 17 at 7 p.m. ET.
