"Today was really great; it was exactly what we were going for. We talked a lot about being in it for the fight. We want to be fighting for one another and racing as a team. Those are things that we wanted them to do, and honestly they did that so well today," Director of Track &Field/Cross Country Lisa Breznau said. "We talk about building confidence, not just who they are as athletes. Who they are when they are away from here. I truly believe how they walk in life is how they are going to behave when they get to the race course."
On the men's side, the Spartans ran a limited roster after competing at the Big Ten Preview last week.
Grand Valley State finished first with 45 points with Cincinnati taking second with 89 points. Michigan State was third with 115 points.
Aden Smith was the top finisher for Michigan State, taking third place with a personal best time of 24:35.54. Running unattached, Carlee Stilmpfel finished fourth overall with a time of 24:40.50. Owen Huard (24:48.17) and Jake Pennewell (25:19.65), finished seventh and 21st, respectively.
"We just really want to say 'thank you' to the entire athletic department and to Playmakers. Today is a force. There are over 4,000 athletes here; there are families and friends and this is a really great event. We couldn't put this on without the support of MSU and members of the community," Breznau said.
Michigan State is back in action next week at the Griak Invitational on Friday, Sept. 23 in Minneapolis.
