Â
MSU also welcomes its women's soccer campers back to campus on Sunday afternoon, as the Spartans host Camper Appreciation Day. HEAD COACH JEFF HOSLER SAID…
"Purdue has a lot of talent; it's just a lot of young talent," MSU head coach Jeff Hosler said. "Given the year they had last year, it's clear that they understand what a winning culture is. (Purdue head coach) Drew (Roff) does a good job building that culture. They have a group that is gaining a lot of valuable experience right now, but they are still capable of beating anybody. They have been in every game, and they've had some good wins. It's a highly competitive, talented group coming to DeMartin on Sunday. We have to look at our approach a little bit differently and play with more of an edge like we had before our first two Big Ten games."
Â
KICKIN' IT
The Green & White return to work boasting a 6-1-3 overall record on the season with a 1-0-1 start to Big Ten play. The Spartans opened with a dominant 3-0 victory on the road against Illinois bolstered by a hat trick from senior forward Lauren DeBeau and followed that performance up with a scoreless draw against Iowa at home. MSU is in the midst of a four-game unbeaten streak dating back to a 0-0 tie with Oakland on Sept. 8. Michigan State has seen a quartet of players land a total of five Big Ten women's soccer weekly honors, one shy of MSU's program record for a season. DeBeau took home Offensive Player of the Week most recently for the Green & White on Sept. 20.
Â
BATTLING THE BOILERMAKERS
Boilermaker head coach Drew Roff and Purdue enter the fray with a 3-6 overall record coupled with an 0-2 start to Big Ten conference play, most recently falling to Wisconsin 5-2. In the preseason Big Ten Coaches Poll, the Boilermakers were picked to finish seventh in the league following a 15-4-3 season in 2021 with an 8-2 ledger in B1G games. Sophomore forward Gracie Dunaway paces the Purdue offense in both scoring (10 points) and goals recorded (4), while junior midfielder Emily Mathews facilitates the Boilermaker attack with four assists on the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Kile manages the net for Purdue, hauling in 37 saves compared to 11 goals allowed in her seven games played.
Â
STORY OF THE SERIES: PURDUE
In one of the more competitive series in program history, Michigan State owns a 14-10-2 edge over Purdue entering the 27th all-time meeting on Sunday. Both teams have played even in the last five meetings, compiling a 2-2-1 record in that span. In games played at DeMartin, the Spartans have compiled a solid 8-5 overall record highlighted by a 2-0 victory in the last home contest on Sept. 29, 2019. The game also served as the most recent win for Michigan State, in which Paige Webber scored the go-ahead goal in the 10th minute, assisted by then-sophomore Camryn Evans. MSU and Purdue last squared off in a regular season game during the COVID-maligned 2021 spring season, in which the Boilermakers registered a 1-0 win at home.
