Hauser Scores 22, but Spartans Fall at Indiana, 82-69

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State came back from a halftime deficit to take leads in the second half, but could not sustain it as Indiana pulled away for an 82-69 win over the Spartans at Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon.

Graduate forward Joey Hauser scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Spartans

Sophomore guard Jaden Akins finished with 15 points and two rebounds, while junior guard A.J. Hoggard added 11 points, two rebounds and two assists.

Michigan State falls to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten Conference, while Indiana improves to 13-6 overall and 4-4 in league play.

Michigan State trailed at the half (37-32) but used an early run and the lead changed hands six times over the first six-plus minutes of the second half.
A 3-pointer from Akins gave the Spartans a 51-49 lead, but Indiana's Tamar Bates responded with one of his, triggering a 10-0 run as the Hoosiers took a 59-51 lead on a layup from Trey Galloway.
Free throws from Hoggard with 10:15 left made it 59-53 and two more shots from the charity stripe from Hauser cut the margin to 62-55 with 8:55 remaining.
Indiana came back with a 10-2 run and took a 72-57 lead on a conventional three-point play from Trayce Jackson Davis with just over five minutes left.
The Spartans got no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
MSU had gone into the break trailing by five points, 37-32, but quickly got back into it, using a 15-5 run over the opening 4:08 to take a 44-42 lead after a pair of baskets from Akins, including a breakaway dunk that tied the game and forced IU to take a timeout.
The Spartans had taken an early lead in the first half on the hot hand of Hauser, who scored 11 points in the opening minutes as MSU used an 11-0 run to take a 17-8 lead nearly six minutes into the game.
Senior guard Tyson Walker hit a pair of baskets to give MSU a 25-16 lead with 7:43 to play, but Indiana scored 10-straight points and took a 26-25 lead on free throws from Bates.
That was part of a larger 21-4 run as the Hoosiers took a 37-29 lead on a three-point play from Jackson-Davis with 1:05 left.
Three of four free throws from Hauser in the final minute pulled the Spartans to within five points.

Indiana shot 47.3 percent from the floor (26-of-55), including 54.2 percent in the second half (13-of-24).
The Hoosiers connected on 60.0 percent of their 3-pointers (9-of-15), including all five in the second half.
IU scored 34 points in the paint, led by Jackson-Davis who scored 31 points and had 15 rebounds.

The loss snapped a three-game win streak against Indiana.
