Five in Double Figures as Michigan State Grinds Out Win against Iowa, 63-61

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State guards Tyson Walker and Jaden Akins hit jumpers in the final 90 seconds and the Spartans held off two final shots from Iowa to grind out a 63-61 win at the Breslin Center Thursday night.
Sophomore guard Jaden Akins scored 12 points and had six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks to lead five players in double figures for the Spartans.
Graduate forward Joey Hauser finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while senior forward Malik Hall came up with 11 points, three rebounds and four assists in his first game in two weeks.
Junior forward Mady Sissoko had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and senior guard Tyson Walker added 10 points and five assists.

Michigan State improves to 14-7 overall and 6-4 in the Big Ten Conference, while Iowa falls to 12-8 and 4-5 in league play.

- In a second half in which Iowa led for more than 11 minutes and with five ties and eight lead changes, the Spartans took a 59-58 lead on a 3-pointer from Walker with 4:59 to play.
- Iowa's Filip Rebraca hit 1-of-2 free throws with 4:42 left to tie it at 59-all and the teams were scoreless for the next 3:18.
- Following an MSU timeout, Walker hit a long jumper from the right wing with 1:24 left to give the Spartans a 61-59 lead. Iowa turned the ball over and Akins followed with a baseline jumper with 49 seconds left to make it 63-59.
- Connor McCaffery hit a basket to cut the lead to 63-61 with 35 seconds left, but junior guard A.J. Hoggard missed a free throw with 20 seconds left, setting up Iowa with a chance to send the game to overtime or win.
- A pair of 3-point attempts from Payton Sandfort were off the mark as the Spartans escaped with the win.
- The Spartans had gone into the half with a 30-29 lead, but Iowa took the lead back early after baskets from Kris Murry and Ahron Ulis.
- The Hawkeyes took their biggest lead of the half, 45-39, on free throws from Tony Perkins with just over 14 minutes to play, but the Spartans responded with a 12-4 run and took a 51-49 lead on a 3-pointer from Hauser with 9:26 left.
- The teams traded the lead back and forth until Walker's jumper gave MSU a short-lived 59-58 lead, setting up the wild finish.
