Michigan State Battles, but Loses at Purdue, 77-61

West Lafayette, Ind. – Michigan State fell behind at the half and pulled to within 10 points in the second half, but would not get any closer en route to a 77-61 loss to No. 1 Purdue on Sunday afternoon at Mackey Arena.

Junior guard A.J. Hoggard led the Spartans with 20 points, six assists and four rebounds, while sophomore guard Jaden Akins scored 12 points

Purdue led by 18 points, 40-22, at the break and extended the lead to 20 points, 44-24, early in the second half on a dunk from Zach Edey.
The Spartans battled and twice pulled to within 10 points, first on a driving layup from senior forward Malik Hall with 11:45 to play.
A jumper from senior guard Tyson Walker cut the lead to 55-45, but the Boilermakers scored six-straight points to make it 61-45 on free throws from Edey with 8:58 left.
Junior forward Mady Sissoko scored on an alley-oop dunk off a feed from Walker to cut the lead to 13 points, 63-50, but that was as close as MSU would get.
David Jenkins and Fletcher Loyer each hit 3-pointers and back-to-back baskets from Edey pushed the lead to 19 points, 73-54, with 4:16 left.
MSU had a pair of leads in the opening minutes of the game, the last on a jumper from Walker that gave MSU a 6-5 lead at 16:01.
Tied at 7-all after a free throw from senior forward Malik Hall, Purdue went on a 10-0 run over 2:02 to take a 17-7 lead on a layup from Trey Renn-Kaufman with 11:38 to play.
The Spartans responded with 3-pointers from Pierre Brooks and Hoggard to cut the lead to 19-13 and were still within four points, 19-15, following a trey from Akins at the 10:11 mark.
Trailing 22-17 after a layup from Hoggard with 8:36 before the break, the Boilermakers got four-straight baskets from Zach Edey and pushed the lead to 30-17, forcing an MSU timeout at 4:35.
A 3-pointer from David Jenkins Jr. just before the break gave the Boilermakers a 40-22 lead at the break.

Purdue shot 50.0 percent from the floor (29-of-58), including 54.8 percent in the first half (17-of-31).
The Boilermakers grabbed 12 offensive rebounds, scored 11 second-chance points and 42 points in the paint, including a game-high 38 points from Edey.
Michigan State committed 14 turnovers and Purdue scored 22 points off of those.
