EAST LANSING, Mich.— Lulu Fulton was the standout on Senior Day with two goals as Michigan State earned 4-0 win over Ball State to cap off the 2023 season.
The Spartans finished the season with a 4-12 record and the Cardinals fall to 7-11.
An emotional Helen Knull comments on what it means to send the seniors off with a victory, "In Friday's game, everybody gave everything they had. Today everyone was tired and exhausted emotionally. I'm proud of how they came out and fought. It was great to see goals fall in today. Every year when you see your seniors graduate, its always emotional and this group was a special group and I'm going to miss them."
MSU needed five minutes to jump out to an early lead as Ellie Rutherford found Fulton for her one of two goals on the day. The Cardinals couldn't find an answer to slow down Rutherford as she registered her fourth goal on the season to give the Spartans an 2-0 lead going into halftime. The home team lead the visitors in shot attempts, 6-4, and had double the amount of corner attempts, 4-2, after 30 minutes.
Following a slow third quarter, freshman Bianca Pizano got in on the party as she found net for the second time this season as the Spartans went ahead with a 3-0 a minute in the fourth quarter. Seniors Celina Riccardo and Fulton started the day celebrating and finished off celebrating as Riccardo found Fulton, who showed amazing stick work in the circle. She drilled the ball into the net with 24 seconds left in the game.
The Spartan defense posted another shutout. Cecily Charles only faced one shot on goal and turned away the Cardinals lone opportunity to get on the board. MSU's offense was aggressive from start to finish leading in shots, 13-4, and corner attempts, 7-2.
Fulton reflected on ending her career on a high note, "It felt good, we had a heartbreak on Friday against Michigan, so we came out today wanting to leave it all out there, have no regrets. It was a complete team effort and it felt great for it to come on Senior Day."
Celina Riccardo comments on contributing on the last goal, "I heard people yelling to calm down, but its Senior Day, we wanted another goal, I just took what we been practicing, I saw Lulu and she took it the rest of the way. It really made my day."
