Field Hockey Falls to No. 9 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Michigan State field hockey took a trip to the east coast to face no. 9 ranked University of Maryland on Friday evening, falling 3-0.
It was a tightly contested first half Reigning B1G defensive Player of the Week Josie Hollamon located Margot Lawn as she scored her first of two goals as Maryland (9-3, 2-1 B1G) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 5:30 in the game.
The Spartans (3-8, 1-4 B1G) were aggressive in the second quarter but were shut out by strong defense from the home team. Five different Spartans had a shot attempt on seven tries, Lulu Fulton and Ellie Wheatley each had two shot attempts in the second quarter. The Green and White led the second stanza with three penalty corner attempts to Maryland's zero.
The Terps' leading scorer Hope Rose maneuvered her way around Spartans goalkeeper Cecily Charles for her 11th goal on the season to give UMD a 2-0 cushion going into the final stanza.
Maryland scored its third goal with Lawn finding the net for the second time in the contest to put the game away.
Charles played all 60 minutes in net for MSU. Charles had 10 saves in the matchup, her third game registering 10 or more saves this season.
The Spartans will be back at home to face Penn State on Friday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m.
