East Lansing, Mich. -- Freshman netminder Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) has been named the Big Ten First Star of the Week, as announced by the Conference office on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
Augustine stopped 60 of 64 shots he faced in a sweep of No. 1 Wisconsin at Munn Ice Arena. He made 32 saves in Friday's 4-2 win, and then 28 in the Saturday clincher to give MSU its first win over a No. 1-ranked squad since October of 2009 (vs. Miami, 3-2 in OT).
Overall on the season, Augustine has started 13 of MSU's 14 games, owns a 2.99 GAA, .913 save percentage, and has a 9-2-1 record, suffering his first and only losses at then-No. 3 Boston College. He leads the Big Ten in both saves (389, second nationally) and saves per game (29.92). He is fifth in save percentage. He is fourth nationally in minutes played (742:46) and shares the national lead in goaltender wins (9).
The freshman – the youngest netminder in Division I hockey - owns a 2.30 GAA and .933 save percentage in Big Ten Conference games, which ranks second in both categories. He owns the most wins (5) and shutouts (1) as all Big Ten teams have played at least six contests.
The Spartans, ranked seventh this week in both polls and the first team in the country to reach 10 victories, are now 10-3-1 and a perfect 5-0-1 in Big Ten play. It is the best-ever start for MSU since the start of the Big Ten Conference for the 2013-14 hockey season.
MSU also swept the No. 1 team in a weekend series for the third time in program history. The first came in January 1974, when it posted 5-4 and 7-6 wins over top-ranked Wisconsin in East Lansing. The following season, MSU traveled to Houghton and swept Michigan Tech on Nov. 8-9 (4-3, 5-4).
Michigan State will spend Thanksgiving weekend on the road in Minneapolis, where it will play a series at Mariucci Arena on Friday and Sunday against Minnesota.
