Moira Joiner and Theryn Hallock both reach career highs in scoring in the win.
CHICAGO, Ill. - Behind a career-high 26 points from graduate guard Moira Joiner as part of five players in double-figures, the Michigan State women's basketball team breezed past DePaul, 102-64, Thursday night at Wintrust Arena.
The Spartans improve to 6-1 this season after their first true road test of the season. The Blue Demons even out their record at 4-4. MSU has now broken the triple-digit mark three times in the seven games this season, the most since the 2017-18 season.
Graduate guard Moira Joiner broke her career high with 26 points, going 4-for-9 from long range, and leading the five Spartans in double-figures. Sophomore guard Theryn Hallock also surpassed her career-best with 14 points, also making four 3-pointers. Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault and junior guard DeeDee Hagemann also had solid offensive nights with 17 points each. Hagemann also added five assists in the win. Sophomore guard Abbey Kimball added 11 points
DePaul was led by 18 points from Anaya Peoples.
Behind a quick five points from Joiner, MSU took an early 10-5 lead in a high paced affair. Both teams were deadly from long range in the first quarter. The Spartans went 6-for-9 from beyond the arc in the first 10 minutes in high-paced quarter. Hagemann led the way for MSU with eight points, as the Spartans were on top, 29-24 when the stanza ended.
In the second quarter, MSU used a 6-0 run to take a 37-28 advantage at the midway point of the period. The run jumped to 8-0 after a pair of Ayrault free throws. The MSU defense was able to keep the Blue Demons off the scoreboard for over five minutes before a Peoples layup. Michigan State held DePaul to only eight points in the period to lead 46-32 at the half.
Michigan State scored the first seven points of the second half, leading to an early Blue Demon timeout, as the Spartans took a 20-point advantage at 53-32. DePaul scored its first basket of the third quarter at the 5:40 mark of the period. Joiner scored 13 of MSU's 27 third period points to lead the way with Ayrault adding eight.
In the fourth quarter, MSU used a 12-2 run to maintain its advantage. All the Spartans got in on the action, including another 12-0 run. Graduate guard/forward Tory Ozment, freshman center Mary Meng and Hallock all provided six points in the final 10 minutes to seal the Victory for MSU.
After three-straight games on the road, the Spartans finally return home to host Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Breslin Center.
Michigan State Women's Basketball Post-Game Notes
• Junior guard DeeDee Hagemann returned to double-figures after two games in single-figures, tallying 17 points Thursday for her fifth double-digit outing of the season and 27th of her career.
• With a game-high six assists Thursday, Hagemann has dished out five or more helpers in five of the seven games.
• Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault matched Hagemann with 17 points, posting double-figures for the fourth-straight game and the fifth time overall this season as part of her 18th career game.
• Ayrault also swatted a game-high two shots, as she has at least one block in all seven games this season as part posting multiple swats in five of the seven contests this season.
• Ayrault also swiped a game-leading three steals for a new season-high and her third game this season with multiple steals.
• Sophomore guard Theryn Hallock netted a career-high 14 points, tallying double-figures for the first time this season and the second time in her career, topping her previous career-best of 10 points vs. Purdue Fort Wayne (11/10/22).
• Hallock also matched Joiner for top 3-point shooting on the team with four 3-pointers, netting a career-high triples and also her first career game with making multiple treys, as she had made one 3-pointer three previous times this season as part of four previous times in her career.
