COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Michigan State softball was defeated by Northern Kentucky, 3-1, on Sunday, Feb. 12, playing in its final game at the Texas A&M Invitational. The Spartans wrap up their opening weekend with a 3-2 record.
Junior Ashley Miller made her third start of the weekend, striking out 11 Northern Kentucky batters in six innings of work. Miller's strikeouts moved her into sole possession of sixth all-time at Michigan State with 372 strikeouts, passing Bridgette Rainey's 368 (2015-18).
Six different Spartan batters drew walks during Sunday's contest.
Michigan State put the first run on the board in the fourth inning when junior Zaquai Dumas unloaded a ball over the center field fence for her first and the teams first home run of the season.
Northern Kentucky was quick to take the lead back however, putting a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With a runner on second, a ball lined off the bag at third allowing the runner time to score. NKU followed up with a double to add their second run of the inning.
A lead-off double set NKU up for more in the sixth inning as an ensuing pair of singles allowed their third run to cross home.
Michigan State put two runners on in the seventh inning as the team looked to make some magic once again, but Northern Kentucky thwarted the Spartan threat.
Up Next: Michigan State returns to the Elon Phoenix Invitational next week where they will face Elon, Fordham, Saint Francis and James Madison. Last season the Spartans went 3-2 in Elon with wins over Elon, East Carolina and Detroit Mercy.
