ELON, N.C. – Michigan State softball was defeated by James Madison on Sunday, Feb. 19, 3-0, to conclude the Spartans' time at the 2023 Elon Phoenix Invitational.
MSU wraps up the weekend with a 2-2 record and moves to 5-4 on the campaign.
Spartan Stats
Junior Ashley Miller (4-3) made the start in the circle for Michigan State pitching six innings and allowing three earned runs (five total). Miller, who is sixth all-time at Michigan State for career strikeouts, struck out five batters to push her career tally to 392 strikeouts and now sits 16 strikeouts behind third place (Stacey Smith, 408, 1994-97).
Sophomore Faith Guidry came on in relief of Miller pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
The Spartans got hits from freshman Mandy Esman, senior Camryn Wincher and sophomore Macy Lee on Sunday along with a walk by senior Kennedy Wyllie. Esman had at least one hit in all four of Michigan State's games this past weekend. Sunday's game against JMU was her only appearance without an RBI.
Scoring Summary
James Madison put one run on the board in each of the first three innings of competition.
JMU opened the scoring in the first after a pair of doubles pushed a run across. The Dukes continued their offensive output in the second after a stolen base and ground out put a runner on third. With a runner on third a two-out lined single to right-center proved to be enough for the runner to score. Another two-out knock proved costly for the Spartans in the third inning.
Two more runs crossed home plate for James Madison in the sixth after a pair of Spartan errors prolonged the inning.
Up Next
Michigan State will travel to the Sunshine State next weekend for a tournament in Tampa hosted by South Florida. The Spartans will meet stiff competition at USF taking on No. 7-ranked Clemson twice, as well as No. 11-ranked Tennessee in addition to USF and Illinois-Chicago.
