Michigan State Hangs on to Beat Maryland, 63-58

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's basketball team scored the first 15 points of the game, fell behind by four points in the second half and junior guard A.J. Hoggard hit two free throws with 25 seconds left and sophomore guard Jaden Akins' fast break dunk with four seconds left sealed a 63-58 win for the Spartans over Maryland on Tuesday night.

Graduate forward Joey Hauser scored a game-high 20 points to lead Michigan State, while senior guard Tyson Walker scored 17 points and junior guard A.J. Hoggard finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

Michigan State improves to 15-9 overall and 7-65 in the Big Ten Conference, while Maryland falls to 16-8 and 7-6 in league play.

Michigan State scored the first 15 points of the game and led by nine points (31-22) at the break and were ahead by 12 points, 38-26, after Hauser hit a jumper with 15:56 to play.
Maryland responded with 12-0 run and tied the game at 38-all on a 3-pointer from Hakim Hart with 13:01 left.
The Terrapins went ahead by four points, 48-44, on a layup from Jahari Long with 9:18 remaining, but the Spartans came back quickly, using an 8-0 run, capped by 3-pointers from Akins and Walker, giving MSU a 52-48 lead with 7:44 left.
That gave MSU the lead for good and the Spartans extended the margin to 59-52 on a Walker layup with 2:48 left, but Maryland was not done as baskets from Jahmir Young and Hart followed by a free throw from Julian Reese cut the lead to 597-57 with 32 seconds left.
Hoggard proceeded to hit two free throws with 22 seconds to make it 61-57 and after 1-of-2 free throws from Maryland's Young, senior forward Malik Hall fed Akins for a dunk with four seconds left to close out the game.
The Spartans had jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first 2:28 of the game, with Walker and Hauser scoring five points apiece.
MSU went nearly seven minutes without a field goal until Hall hit a jumper with 9:44 to play, making it 19-8.
Free throws from junior forward Mady Sissoko gave MSU a 31-19 lead but a 3-pointer from Donta Scott cut the margin to 12 points at the break.
