Spartans Continue B1G Play with Weekend Slate

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State women's tennis is back in action as the Spartans continue conference play with a weekend doubleheader, hitting the road to face Iowa on Friday, March 17, followed by a home match against Nebraska on March 19. The Spartans will face the Hawkeyes with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT, while the home dual against the Cornhuskers is slated for 10 a.m. ET.

#UNMATCHED APPROACH
The Spartans enter the weekend at 7-5 (0-1 B1G) having dropped two of their last three contests but proving victorious in three of the past five duals. Sophomore Liisa Vehvilainen leads the Spartans in singles with a 7-3 record, including a 5-2 record at the No. 1 singles slot, while Spartan freshmen Juliette Nask and Marley Lambert are tied for second on the team with five singles victories.
In doubles, the Spartans are led by the pairing of Ayshe Can and Vehvilainen, who have won seven-straight completed matches with two of their last three matches having gone unfinished. The duo leads all Spartan doubles pairings with an 8-1 record this season.

MSU returns to the court having dropped its latest dual to No. 6 Michigan last Saturday in Ann Arbor after splitting a pair of duals in Miami, Fla. last week. The Spartans followed up their week-opening loss to No. 35 Florida International with a dominant 4-0 victory over Middle Tennessee. The Spartans concluded their three-match week competing hard at doubles and singles, ultimately falling to No. 6 Michigan in their first match in Big Ten play.
Can, a Florida native, went undefeated in the two duals in the Sunshine State, picking up MSU's lone point against FIU while later earning a straight set win over MTSU's Sana Garakani. Can's match against Michigan's No. 34 Julia Fliegner went unfinished.

No. 60 Iowa returns home at 5-6 (0-1 B1G) after dropping its first conference match to No. 3 Michigan, 4-0. The Hawkeyes are led by freshman Daianne Hayashida who has six singles wins along with a 6-2 record in doubles. Iowa currently leads the all-time series 32-17 and won last season's meeting in East Lansing, 4-1.
No. 63 Nebraska heads into the weekend at 10-2 (0-0 B1G) beginning conference play on Friday, March 17 against No. 3 Michigan before traveling to East Lansing. The Cornhuskers are coming off a narrow defeat to Wichita State and are led by senior Samantha Alicea who boasts a 18-3 overall record, including a 9-1 record in singles. The Spartans own a 6-3 record against Nebraska but dropped last season's meeting on the road, 4-1.
