MSU Advances in the B1G Tournament with 67-64 Win Over Nebraska

Senior guard Moira Joiner leads the Spartans with 16 points and four steals.
MINNEAPOLIS - Behind a stellar performance at both ends of the floor by senior guard Moira Joiner, the No. 9-seeded Michigan State women's basketball team edged No. 8-seeded Nebraska, 67-64, in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament at the Target Center on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Spartans have now won three in a row and improves to 16-13 overall. Nebraska falls to 16-14 overall.
Michigan State will now take on No. 1-seeded Indiana on Friday, March 3 at 12:30 p.m. ET. The Spartans captured the regular-season meeting with the Hoosiers, 83-78, on Dec. 29 in East Lansing.
Sophomore guard DeeDee Hagemann once again led the way with 18 points, adding three assists and two steals. Joiner was solid all around with 16 points, five rebounds and four steals, while graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel added 12 points.
Nebraska was led by a game-high 24 points from Jaz Shelley.
The Spartans scored the first seven points of the game leading to an early Nebraska timeout at the 8:21 mark. MSU had three steals before the midway point of the quarter to establish its defensive presence. The Huskers started the game 1-for-10 from the field, as MSU took a 11-3 advantage. Despite the tough defense, the Spartans couldn't get the offense going and only led 15-9 at the end of the period.
In the second quarter, the Huskers used a 6-0 run to cut the MSU lead to 22-20 with under six minutes left in the half. The Spartans were hampered by 13 turnovers in the half. MSU did benefit from 18 points in the paint to lead 29-25 at the break. Hagemann and senior forward Taiyier Parks led the Spartans with six points each, despite Parks' foul trouble.
In the third quarter, Nebraska tied the game at 36, using a 6-0 run over 1:18, before a Matilda Ekh trey stopped the run. The Spartans went over two minutes without a field goal, as Nebraska took its first lead of the game after a pair of Shelley free throws, 41-40 at the 2:36 mark. With a dazzling Hagemann spin move with three seconds left, Michigan State took a 46-44 advantage in to the final stanza.
The Spartans scored the first eight of the fourth to take their first double-digit lead, 54-44, as the Huskers called timeout at the 7:25 mark. MSU would take a big a lead as 13 points, but the Huskers were not done fighting. Nebraska responded with an 8-0 run of its own to make it a five-point game, as the Spartans looked to close out the game. Isabelle Bourne hit a trey with 44 seconds left to cut it to 67-64, but MSU was able to close it out to survive and advance.

• Michigan State went with the lineup of graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel, sophomore guard DeeDee Hagemann, sophomore forward Isaline Alexander, sophomore guard/forward Matilda Ekh and senior guard Moira Joiner. This lineup is now 5-4 this season. On Senior Day on Feb. 22, the Spartans utilized the starting lineup of Hagemann, McDaniel, Stephanie Visscher, Alexander and Jayla James for the first time this season (1-0).
