Softball Takes Down Houston in Tempe

Michigan State's overall record moves to 7-11 on the season with one final game to play at the 2023 Sun Devil Classic, a 9:30 a.m. MT showdown with Boise State on Sunday, March 5.
Game One – Michigan State 8, Houston 5
Spartan Stats
Junior Ashley Miller (6-6) made the start in the circle for the Spartans pitching 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Miller did not allow a hit through the first three innings of work. Sophomore Faith Guidry entered the game in relief of Miller recording three outs before being lifted for sophomore Madison Taylor. Guidry allowed two hits and one earned run. Taylor recorded the final two outs of the game to earn her second career save.
Fifth-year Jessica Mabrey reached base four times going 2-for-2 with a triple, an RBI, a walk, a HBP and two runs scored. Sophomore Macy Lee reached base three times going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Junior Collette Allen led the team with two RBIs, while freshman Sydney Doloszycki, junior Alexis Barroso and junior Zaquai Dumas each had one. Freshman Mandy Esman broke out of a slump going 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Senior Kennedy Wyllie doubled and scored a run for the Spartans.
Michigan State put on its second-best hitting performance of the season going 10-for-24 (.417) at the dish, reaching seven additional times with four walks and three HBP's.
Scoring Summary
Michigan State struck first after Mabrey's lead-off triple into the right-center gap set up a sac fly to center for Doloszycki. The Spartans loaded the bags with two outs in the second inning but were unable to capitalize.
MSU increased its advantage in the third following a lead-off single for Doloszycki that saw her end up at third base after an error in center. Doloszycki was driven home later in the inning by a Barroso sac fly.
The Spartans doubled their advantage in the fourth scoring a pair of runs to take a 4-0 lead. Wyllie led off the inning with a double into the left-center gap before taking third and scoring on a pair of wild pitches. Esman drew a walk and later moved to third on a wild pitch before being driven home by Mabrey on a single to center.
With two on in the fifth, Dumas singled through the left side of the infield to score pinch runner Kayla Bane from second, giving the Spartans a 5-0 lead.
Houston used a big sixth frame to pull back within one run of the Spartans. The Cougars scored four runs on three hits, two walks and an error.
Needing some insurance runs, Michigan State answered the call with a big inning of its own to the tune of three runs. A lead-off single for Esman and a Mabrey walk set up a double to the left-center gap for Allen to score a pair. Allen later came around to score after Doloszycki reached on an error.
The Cougars scored one in the seventh to threaten but were ultimately thwarted by MSU.
Game Two – #23/RV Arizona State 15, Michigan State 2
Spartan Stats
Three Spartan pitchers saw action in game two, with sophomore Madison Taylor earning the start. Junior Ashlyn Roberts and sophomore Faith Guidry also made appearances.
Seven Spartan batters had hits in game two, led by junior Jenae Wash's two-hit performance. Fifth-year Jessica Mabrey doubled for the Spartans. Freshman Sydney Doloszycki drove in both Spartan runs. Junior Collette Allen and sophomore Macy Lee each reached base twice with a single and a walk, while freshman Mandy Esman singled and was hit by a pitch.
Michigan State batters hit .381 (8-for-21) despite the run differential. ASU led in hits 14 to eight.
Scoring Summary
Arizona State posted five first inning runs to take an early lead over the Spartans. ASU added to its lead with five additional runs in the second inning.
Michigan State's offense started to heat up in the top of the third scoring a pair of runs. MSU found themselves with the bases loaded after Esman, Mabrey and Allen all reached to set up Doloszycki. Doloszycki brought two runners around to score on a single into left field. Lee drew a walk to reload the bags, but an untimely double play halted the Spartan momentum.
The Sun Devils extended their lead in the third with another five run frame to take a 15-2 lead.

Michigan State wraps up its trip to Arizona on Sunday, March 5 with a 9:30 a.m. MT game against Boise State. The Spartans will then hit the road to San Diego where they'll play four games at the Torero Classic hosted by San Diego.
