Spartans clawed by Cougars in second meeting of weekend.
MSU levels its record at 5-5 after being clipped by CofC for the second time on the weekend following an 11-3 defeat Friday, with a 19-10 win at Charleston Southern on Saturday. CofC improves to 7-3 with the win, the Cougars' sixth in a row, having scored 10+ runs in their last three contest. The Spartans wrap up their extended weekend in Charleston on the first leg of their Spring Break trip on Monday vs. Air Force at scenic Shipyard Park.
"We're disappointed in the game today, but credit College of Charleston, they're a good ballclub over there and their hitters really competed," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I thought Harrison Cook did a nice job for us, and didn't have a whole lot to show for it, unfortunately. I think they (CofC) put some good swings on some really good pitches and they were rewarded for it, and that's just how the game goes sometimes, but our guys will be ready to go tomorrow against a very good Air Force team."
The Spartans scored their three runs on seven hits, plating one run in the fifth and two in the eighth. The Cougars collected 10 runs on 12 hits, scoring two in the first, two in the fifth, three in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth for the final 10-3 score.
MSU was led by junior infielder Dillon Kark going 2-for-4 with one run scored, while junior infielder Brock Vradenburg was 1-for-4 with two RBI coming on a two-run opposite field home run in the eighth, driving in fellow junior infielder Trent Farquhar who led off with an opposite field double down the line. Farquhar finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Junior outfielder Greg Ziegler was 1-for-2, junior outfielder Jack Frank was 1-for-3, while senior outfielder Casey Mayes went 1-for-4.
On the mound, junior Harrison Cook started and went 5.1 IP with three Ks, yielding six runs on seven hits. Junior Max Chapman (0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R) along with freshmen Gavin Sitarz (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 K, 1 BB) and Robert Klann (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB) finished it off.
Sunday's game at College of Charleston was part of MSU's third weekend since the mass shooting on the East Lansing campus on Monday, Feb. 13, when three MSU students were killed and five were hospitalized. Michigan State University canceled classes the rest of the week following the deaths of the three students – juniors Arielle Anderson and Alexandria Verner and sophomore Brian Fraser. Classes resumed on Monday, Feb. 20.
Michigan State players again wore "Spartan Strong" stickers on their helmets in a tribute, and several players had personal tributes as well.
Charleston plated a pair of runs in its first at bat, getting a leadoff walk, followed by back-to-back doubles, before Cook retired the next three Cougar batters.
Cook had a 3-up, 3-down second stanza, then worked around a leadoff double in the third, before another 1-2-3 inning in the fourth, ending it with a strikeout.
The Spartans get on the board in the top of the fifth as Kark sparked the rally with a leadoff single, moved to second on a Ziegler single and to third on an Anderson sac bunt. Kark scored on a Farquhar RBI groundout, before the rally fizzled, but not before MSU had cut the gap in half at 2-1.
Charleston scored two runs with two outs in the home half of the fifth, with back-to-back singles to right center, before Cook got out of the jam by fielding his position on a swinging bunt and flipped to Vradenburg at first to end the Cougars' rally, leaving the score at 4-1.
The home team added on to its lead with a three-run sixth inning, chasing Cook, before Chapman got out of the jam with a flyout to Ziegler in center and to Kark at third, stranding two Cougars on base after three CofC hits led the three runs for a 7-1 Charleston lead. CofC tacked on a run in the seventh for an 8-1 advantage.
Farquhar led off the eighth with a double down the left field line and two batters later, Vradenburg launched his opposite field two-run home run to pull MSU within 8-3.

The five-run deficit was short-lived as CofC added two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of a pair of MSU fielding errors for the final 10-3 score, with Farquhar making a diving stop for the first out of the frame and part of a 6-4-3 double play to finish the frame.
Michigan State went down in order in the ninth to end the game."Great play by the Spartan shortstop!"
