EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sophomore Faith Guidry chased perfection on Saturday morning, tossing the 24th no hitter in program history in Michigan State's 4-0 victory over Purdue in game one of a doubleheader at Secchia Stadium. Guidry became the 18th different pitcher in program history to pitch a no hitter and the first since junior Ashley Miller did so during the 2022 season.
The Spartans were defeated in game two of the doubleheader, 4-2. Michigan State earned its first series victory of the season taking 2-of-3 games from Purdue over the weekend. MSU improved its record to 14-29 overall and 4-16 in the B1G with a pair of wins this weekend.
Game One – Michigan State 4, Purdue 0
Spartan Stats
Guidry (5-11) allowed just two walks while striking out five Boilermaker batters in game one, needing just 84 pitches to complete the no hitter. It's Guidry's eighth complete game and second complete game shutout performance of the season.
Guidry was supported on offense by a two-hit performance by senior Jessica Mabrey and a two-RBI game by freshman Gabbie Evans, who tallied her first career hit in a fourth inning pinch hit appearance. Senior Kendall Kates and freshman Mandy Esman each doubled for the Spartans, while sophomore Macy Lee collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right in the first inning.
Junior AJ Militello and senior Anna Fox each stole a base in game one for MSU.
How It Happened
Lee opened up the scoring by plating Mabrey on a sac fly to right field in the first inning. Mabrey singled to lead-off the game before advancing to third on a sac bunt and wild pitch.
The Spartans increased their advantage to 4-0 in the fourth inning after a lead-off double by Kates and a walk and steal by Militello put runners on second and third for Evans at the bottom of the order. Evans came through in the clutch with her first career hit, driving in Kates and Militello to five the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
After Fox entered as a pinch runner for Evans, she stole second and later scored on a throwing error by the Boilermaker third baseman.
Guidry struck out two of the final three Purdue batters to leave no doubt on her break-out performance.
Game Two – Purdue 4, Michigan State 2
Spartan Stats
Sophomore Madison Taylor took the circle for MSU in game two allowing two earned runs on six hits over 3.2 innings of work. Taylor was relieved by junior Ashley Miller (6-11) who closed out the final 3.1 innings of action allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out four Purdue batters.
How It Happened
Purdue broke through first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out single to right. The Boilermakers would double their advantage in the third with a two-out rally that saw batters reach on back-to-back singles.
Michigan State quickly tied the action in the third inning after Mabrey put herself in scoring position thanks to a triple off the centerfield wall. A two-out single to right by Lee scored Mabrey and Esman's double down the left field line scored pinch runner freshman Hailey Bila, who entered for Lee.
The Spartans held Purdue scoreless for the next two innings before the Boilermakers added two decisive runs in the sixth. A walk and two singles with two outs led to a pair of Purdue runs as they took a 4-2 lead over MSU.
