4/30/2023 4:01:00 PM | Women's Rowing
East Lansing, MIch. -- Michigan State faced a number of quality crews racing in Women's Sprints in Worcester on Sunday, completing its regular-season racing slate.
Only one boat advanced into a Grand Final out of morning heats: the novice eight, lining up in the third varsity eight race. After finishing second to Brown in the morning heat, the Spartans rowed to a sixth-place finish overall (6:52.270) in the afternoon Grand Final. Brown ran away with the race, finishing a full six seconds ahead of second-place Syracuse. MSU's second novice eight, competing in the fourth varsity eight race, only raced once, and finished third to Northeastern and Columbia in a time of 7:17.290.
MSU's second varsity eight earned an eighth-place finish overall by taking second in the Petite Final, clocked in a time of 6:38.590, finishing a length behind Northestern and about six seats ahead of Dartmouth, which took second. MSU's varsity eight had an impressive race in the Third-Level Final, using a tremendous push in the final 500 meters to nearly overcome a near-length deficit, clocking in a time of 6:37.39 – just over half a second behind Dartmouth, which held off the charging Spartans at the end. MSU was a length ahead of third-place Cornell at the finish line. MSU's time was better than three boats in the Petite Final.
In the fours, both the varsity four and second varsity four earned spots in the Petite Finals in their morning heats. The varsity four managed a fourth-place time (7:38.660) behind Boston University, Rhode Island, and Drexel, while the second varsity four was second in its race to finish eighth overall on the day in a time of 7:45.59, a length behind Boston College but about four seats ahead of Northeastern in third. The third varsity four was in a seven-boat Grand Final only, and took second behind Rutgers' 3V4 in a time of 7:33.370. MSU was more than two seconds ahead of third-place Brown and four ahead of Radcliffe.
MSU will be idle next Saturday and returns to action on Sunday, May 14 in Indianapolis at the Big Ten Championships.
