MSU Off to Big Ten Championships

East Lansing - Michigan State heads to Eagle Creek Park north of Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, May 14.

Racing begins at 9 am on Sunday, with the second novice eights the first off the line to start the Championships. The format of the championships is solely grand finals in each boat class, racing eight across. Racing will be held on 10-minute centers, culminating in the 11 am varsity eight race. The Spartans will field two varsity eights, three fours, and two novice eight entries.

The Big Ten has five crews in the Pocock/CRCA National Poll this week (No. 11 Michigan, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 15 Indiana, No. 16 Rutgers, and No. 18 Iowa). MSU has lined up against six of the seven other Big Ten schools throughout the regular season – this will be MSU's first time racing Michigan in 2023.

The Spartans have four graduate or fifth-year students and three seniors on this year's roster – Emily Carless, Kendall Carlin, Ella Kubas, Victoria Mills, Mackenzie Rugg, Molly Stothard, and Olivia Tolkinen. MSU also rosters 17 juniors, 19 sophomores, and 29 freshmen.

Spartan rowing dedicated three brand-new shells for the 2023 campaign.  The Olivia Long '23 makes its B1G Championship debut this weekend for the varsity eight. The boat was dedicated last fall in memory of Long, who passed away from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident prior to her junior campaign.  Two brand-new varsity four shells were dedicated in November: the Molon Labe (dedicated by the Class of 2024), is the shell for the varsity four, and the Grand Legacy, (dedicated by the Class of 2004), is the boat for the second varsity four.
