East Lansing, Mich. – Patricia Sanz Barrio, a long-time touring professional who has extensive playing and coaching experience on the international stage and was a first-team all-conference selection as a collegiate golfer, was named an assistant women's golf coach at Michigan State today.
Sanz Barrio, a native of Spain who played college golf at Auburn in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), has been a full member of the Ladies European Tour (LET) since 2014 and played on the Syemtra Tour from 2017-19 while also helping Madrid youth teams in Spain for two years.
"I'm delighted to have someone with Patricia's experience join our family," MSU Head Coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. "She was a successful golfer on the college level and has had a terrific career as a professional in Europe while also getting the opportunity to coach and instruct on an international level. Given that our roster includes young women from around the world, I know Patricia's world-wide life experiences will make her a great addition to our program and the Spartan Golf Family."
As a collegian at Auburn, Sanz Barrio became the sixth Tiger to earn SEC medalist honors as she led the team to the 2012 conference title while being named All-SEC First Team. A member of three SEC Championship teams (2009, 2011-12), Sanz Barrio posted 10 top-20 finishes during her career, still ranks among the all-time leaders in eagles at Auburn and her 67 in the second round of the 2011 conference tournament is second-best low round in program history in the SEC Championship.
Sanz Barrio, who earned her bachelor's degree in biomedical science, graduating cum laude, and went on to earn a master's in nutrition and sports science in 2021, was a three-time National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar (2009-11) and a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection.
Following her graduation from Auburn, Sanz Barrio pursued a professional career and has played on the LET since 2014, serving as a member of the Players Council from 2017-19. She finished second in the LET Access Series, posting three runner-up finishes and winning the 2013 Grecotel Amirandes Ladies Open in Crete, earning her a full card for the LET.
In her rookie year on the LET in 2014, she played in 18 tournaments, tying for 12th place at the Ladies Slovak Open. Sanz Barrio also played for two years (2017-19) on the United States-based Symetra Tour.
Outside of her playing career, Sanz Barrio has coaching experience on the international level in her native Spain. She was the coach of the Madrid team from 2016-17, helping lead the team to the Spanish National Women's Team Championship in 2016. In addition, she coached the U14 Madrid girls and boys teams in the Spanish National Championship, was the coach for U20 teams in Spain during the summer of 2016 and has coached the Junior Winner's Girls Camp for the last seven years.
Over the last four years (2017-21), Sanz Barrio has been a scout for the National Scouting Report of Spain, working with golfers from the country who were seeking opportunities to play and attend school in the United States.
