
Spartans Battle in 3-2 Overtime Defeat

EAST LANSING, Mich.—Although two different Spartans found the net, MSU fell in a 3-2 overtime thriller to Stanford University.
Following a slow 21 minutes to start, both teams' offenses came alive in the 22-minute mark. The Spartans (1-4) got on the board first when Cardinal goalie Kendall Dowd deflected a shot attempt from Tess Keppel but senior midfielder Lulu Fulton was there to earn her first goal of the season. Senior Kim Smit got in on the action after Ellie Rutherford had a shot saved by Dowd. Smit was able to tap the ball in for a buzzer-beater that brought the crowd in an uproar to end the half.

The Cardinal (2-4) scored its lone goal in the first half 55 seconds Fulton's goal when Chantal Eiwanger found Maroussia Walckiers for her second goal of the season. Stanford trailed MSU 2-1 after 30 minutes of play. The Spartans led the Cardinal shots in the first half, 8-4. Stanford had a 5-2 corners advantage.
After a scoreless third quarter, Stanford senior midfielder Caroline Guden tied the game 2-2 on a corner play with six and half minutes left in regulation.
Emma O'Neill, Celina Riccardo, and Fulton each had one shot attempt in the final stanza but couldn't convert them into goals. After 60 minutes, MSU went into its first overtime game of the year.
After two minutes in the overtime period, Cardinal freshman Gemma Townsend located Haley Mossmer for the game-winning goal. Dowd totaled all 60+ minutes in goal and tied a career high six saves.
For the Spartans, a total of 18 players saw the field in today's competitive matchup. Fulton had four shots with three on target and a goal scored. Smit earned her first goal this season. Freshman Gavino made her third consecutive start in goal for the Green and White, and finished with two saves.
Michigan State will host Big Ten rival Ohio State in a Big Ten televised matchup on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 12:00 p.m. It will be a special day at Ralph Young Field, as the program will host the 10-year reunion for the 2013 B1G Champions.
