Kerrigan’s Late-Game PK Goal Boosts No. 18/22 Spartans To 2-1 Win Over Hoosiers

MSU earns first win over Indiana since 2014 with Friday night victory.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- No. 18/22 Michigan State men's soccer posted its first win over Indiana since 2014 with a 2-1 Victory for MSU on Friday night at a spirited DeMartin Stadium as part of MSU Homecoming festivities.
Junior midfielder Sean Kerrigan, a native of Sligo, Ireland and with his parents visiting from Ireland in attendance, roofed a penalty kick goal in the 77th minute for a 2-1 Spartan advantage. The MSU defense then bolted down the hatches and defended DeMartin for the win, sparking the celebration of the nearly 3,000 fans in attendance to cap a festive day of Homecoming activities on MSU's campus.
The Spartans remain unbeaten to open the 2023 season, improving to 5-0-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Big Ten Conference action. The Hoosiers had a two-match unbeaten streak halted, as the 2022 College Cup participant Hoosiers slide to 3-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in B1G action.
Along with tying in last season's meeting, 1-1, MSU's previous win over Indiana was on Nov. 5, 2014 in Bloomington, Ind., and was also a one-goal contest, 3-2. The Spartans' last win over the Hoosiers in a match played in East Lansing was Oct. 28, 2012, with a 3-1 Victory for MSU.
"It feels great. Look, I was really proud of these guys, Indiana is a very good program, really well coached," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I thought it was a great college soccer game, two high level teams. I thought we obviously came out first 15 minutes or so was very good, got the goal, and to their credit the second half of the first half they were really good and had us on our heels. You know, I thought we came out really good in the second half, we made a couple of adjustments, and really kept the pressure on, drew the penalty and then outside of a couple restarts really closed the game out well."
Kerrigan has now scored a goal in the three of the last four games, and takes over the team goal-scoring lead.
In the 15th minute, freshman Richie Ludwig took a pass from sophomore midfielder Cristiano Bruletti, and fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box and slotted in home to the lower left corner of the IU goal and past Hoosier goalkeeper JT Harms, to give MSU the early 1-0 advantage.
The Spartans' lead was short-lived as in the 20th minute, Indiana's Samuel Sarver scored the equalizer on a partial breakaway. Sarver fired a shot that Spartan redshirt-sophomore netminder Zac Kelly got a hand to, but not enough to keep it out of the net, leveling the score at 1-all.
That remained the score for the rest of the half, with IU holding a slim, 8-6, edge in shots, with Kelly making three first-half saves, compared to one for Harms.
The second-half action was back-and-forth, with both defenses denying the opposition's chances.
In the 77th minute, sophomore forward Jonathan Stout was fouled in the box, before getting reviewed by the official. After video review confirmed the penalty kick, Kerrigan smashed the shot to the upper right corner of the net for what held up as the game-winning goal.
MSU and IU ended the match tied on shots at 13 apiece, with Kelly, the two-time defending B1G Defensive Player of the Week, making a season-high tying five saves. Corner kicks were also level, 3-3, and there were 32 fouls whistled, with two yellow cards being issued, both to Indiana.
The Spartans host in-state foe Oakland on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. in a non-conference contest at DeMartin Stadium.
